July Microfiction Challenge

Words: We Accept. Hero. When

When would these days get any better with the forceful strikes on the mainland and the starvation continued to take a toll on us in the ravaged city of darkness. The heat had sank in the smell of bad things lingered day to day as bellies swelled and the water rancid. We accepted our fate in spite of our brave nature as the forces of evil came together to make us look to be the wretched ones. Could there be a hero among us in all this strife that beat us down with only empty pots on our heads. And then from the skies came bundles of food that were foreign to us, but I couldn't remember the last time I'd had Reese's Pieces.

OC RP Han

"So what are you trying to say?" Han was in shock. Ezra knew way too much about Dakota. They'd been spending time together. Mainly, texting on their phone. "Is it over with you and Fiona?"

He didn't think it had barely started. All Ezra had managed to do was console his long-lost coworker.

"No." Ezra squinted and leaned back in his comfy cushions as he went on to play the video game that Han brought. He was close-mouthed getting through the tunnel of gore in the game. The mafia always showed up in unexpected places. He sighed but finally said. "She thinks I should just let it go with Fiona. You know, she needs to work things out."

Han nodded. He agreed. "So? You and Dakota?" Han looked him over as if Ezra had moved on, but he yelped back, "NO!"

This gave Han a smile. Of course, he mentioned the sisters, Alex and Sam. "I've had lunch with them a few times." He looked as if something was happening.

"Stop acting like you're dating both of them. They are just being nice to you. They probably don't know how annoying you can be."

Ezra shut him down from saying anything more about the lovely two who were so resourceful. Han admired them both. He didn't know which one he liked better. He just couldn't choose.

"Have you interviewed them yet?" Ezra asked, but wouldn't look at him as he kept up with the fierce game.

Han dug out a rice cake, then. The cake was as dry as could be. The only thing Ezra had to eat.

Han bit into ever so bitter. Han looked around Ezra's place. At least the bathroom was fixed. Han was certain he could definitely create a LOVE NEST with a lava lamp and plenty of refreshments, of course. No, this was still his grandma's place.

Han continued to eat the rice cake, wishing it were popcorn or there was peanut butter to make it a real meal. No such look.

"You know, you only want them on video so you can watch it again and again." Ezra pouted. Han gave Ezra a sly look, wondering how his friend knew.

Food Porn and More!

LAW AND THE CITY has a lot to offer. Lawyers, having cases (some better than others), but find time to eat lunch and sometimes take a coffee break — and of course, dinner. I wasn't so sure I was going to like it at first from the voice over in the beginning, but then I got to know this group of young lawyers working in the Law district of a big city..which I will say is Seoul. And as luck would have it, there is a merger. Of course, our ML finds out that the new lawyer (FL) was the girl he met in Hong Kong, who he thought was going to be a pianist, and he was never really sure if they would meet up again. So awkwardness arises between both of them and neither can decide if they like each other, after all, but then they both need each other's wits with the workloads they have. You get to discover local foods and some things you can be sued for in Korea that you might not see anywhere else. Truly, it's a cozy, comfortable drama that lasts 12 episodes. Most episodes last well over an hour, but you don't seem to mind. Now on Viki and Disney+.

A senior associate lawyer in his ninth year, An Ju Hyeong seems cold-blooded, but no one can deny his competence in the field. He became a lawyer simply because he found logic and cases interesting, but from the start of his career, he never grasped the idea that lawyers are supposed to protect the weak, uphold justice, and make a difference in the world. Although he's a veteran among associates and has even set a new salary record, he refuses to open his own practice, finding it too troublesome. But now, the once-peaceful walls of his workplace are beginning to crack. On the other hand, Kang Hui Ji, a junior associate at Johwa Law Firm, is a social butterfly who always ends up surrounded by people. She believes that “if you change one person's life, you have changed that person's entire world.” Whether she is lacking or overflowing, she is a confident and honest person. Alongside them are Bae Mun Jeong, Cho Chang Won, and Ha Sang Gi. These five lovable law firm attorneys struggle and grow through various cases, both inside and outside the courtroom, while building solid friendships by having meals together.

Flash Fiction Challenge - It happened at the Beach House: Ben & Liz

Liz knew Ben was complicated. Especially, his love life, which she knew not to ask. All she'd done this summer was help out at the old bar by the beach. Perhaps, he was something of a big brother after all. She'd settled on this fact as summer had brought a few opportunities in boyfriend material. Even so, she detested having friends fix her up with dates.

"Well, you should say something," Ben bit back that she could find her own boyfriend if she really wanted to.

She nodded and went on cleaning up as if they'd had this conversation on repeat and she was tired of listening to it. Besides, she found things were pretty easy going with the guy who was here for the summer on his college break. Cole was OK. They were still getting to know each other which meant the romantic leap had not taken place and possibly wouldn't. But the math of their so-called something was getting consuming since he'd added his friend Zeth to all their dates.

"Oh, maybe he's got a threesome in mind," Ben had laughed about it when she mentioned how Cole's friend was tagging along on their so-called dates. The thought gave Liz a nervous panic attack as she went on with her duty of checking the fridge for tomorrow's supplies. She was keeping quiet about that lately. Yes, it was best to tell him nothing these days, and she was beginning to think it might bother him.

"Why don't we take a drive?" Ben announced one late night after closing time.

"Really?" She yawned back. "Where?"

"Oh, I know a place." Ben was downright giddy about it, dancing circles around her as if it might be fun.

"I don't know," she shook her head, thinking it was a bad idea. Were they even friends? Sometimes, Liz knew she said too much. Especially about Cole and Zeth.

Of course, she knew she was plain. Far from the high-maintenance type that came to the bar just to have one of Ben's Mojitos, a drink Liz wasn't fond of and would never drink on the job, anyway.

"Quit over-thinking. Let's go."

And with that, she climbed into his old jeep, wondering if he might have rabbit hunting in mind.

"Rabbit hunting?" He laughed, starting up the old machine and pulling the gears as if it might be a gym workout. "Where did that come from?"

She mumbled something about going rabbit hunting with the neighbor boys when she was little back on a farm in Texas. Ben kept laughing, but they were on their way as the sea breeze mellowed the night, and yet everything felt fresh on the way to the Beach House.

However, the place was run down and probably more of a shack in the moonlight. "I used to love it here," Ben said when the jeep headlights revealed the place in the darkness.

"Probably in the daytime," Liz shrugged. She didn't think much of it at one in the morning.

"Yeah, yeah." His mustache almost went sideways as if she didn't need to question him.

He kicked the door open and proceeded to go in. Liz stood at the threshold wondering if she could really trust him. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her into the dark.

"It's kind of lost its luster over the years." He got out his Bic lighter and flicked it. Soon enough, he found a candle to light, yet held on to her wrist as if he'd taken her hostage.

"All sorts of shit happened here," he told her about his first kiss with some senior in college when he was twelve. There had been plenty of parties here that he thought of fondly.

"I guess it's a special place," Liz could barely say above a whisper. She knew there were ghosts here as hairs on her forearm prickled.

 "Damn straight."

Ben looked at Liz as if she needed to take him seriously, but she didn't know this side of him. Her hand grew slack and he let go. His hand was getting sweaty.  Instantly, she hugged herself as if he might have seen too much of her in her tank and cutoffs.

"I'm thinking about buying the place," he told her. Ben couldn't live above the bar forever.

"But, it's so convenient." She looked at him blankly and told him it might take a lot of money to fix it up.

"I got plenty of time for that." Ben nodded, taking her on a tour of the old place. The bedrooms were upstairs with a simple bathroom. Nothing fancy about the place. Anyone else would tear it down and start over with fresh lines. Yeah, they could get a pretty penny for it, imagined Liz. And then she saw the clothes on the bed. Dirty laundry was in the bathroom.

"But, it looks-" Liz wanted to tell him she thought people lived here.

"What?" Ben dared.

"Is it OK to be here?"

Ben cracked a smile. He went to the fridge and pulled out a diet soda to open for her. Evidently, the electricity was on after all.

"Are you living here?" Liz was puzzled. She took the open drink from him to take a sip.

"I want to be here with you."

Liz choked on the foamy drink. She cleared her throat. It felt like a good time to tell him her many faults, yet she wondered how far this could go.

"You need to quit playing with boys," he informed her.

She nodded with a straight lip. Yes, sometimes she could get to the ending quickly, but the fact remained he'd already chosen his partner. After all, she knew Ben had a hankering for a loyal pup and Liz sensed he found that in her too.

"Fine." She put down her drink, and he kissed her as if he'd erase those other summer memories.

Still, she had to wonder if they'd still be here when the owners came home.

July Microfiction

WORDS: Waves. Sun-kissed. Am I the only one.

The waves kept knocking Janey down into the choppy sea. Her sun-kissed face would rise up to take a breath with ease. There was no outer bank to find as she drifted farther out in the big blue. She shuddered to think, "Am I the only one?" What if a great white circled around her was the thought that emerged as she closed her eyes, thinking this was the end, but the waves kept pushing her, and she closed her eyes, lying back to make peace, ready to part from this world. Suddenly, Janey felt the back of her head ram into something hard, and it took her breath away to be shocked she'd managed to drift into a cove.

It Happened at the Beach House - FLASH FICTION CHALLENGE

It was going to be the best week of our lives, or so Sara's sister had told her on the drive there. Of course, Sara hadn't seen her sister in months. Sara had been abroad studying Italian food. She wasn't there for her sister Nina’s big breakup with longtime boyfriend Jonah.

Sure, they'd texted each other.  Sara let Nina do all the texting and lashing out about her future husband. Sara didn't get it, but then again, she hadn't fallen in love with the quarterback that everyone loved in her hometown, either. She did her best to be supportive, and of course, it was Nina's idea to go to their grandparents' beach house, who were now in assisted living.

But once they went down that old familiar dirt road to get there, it felt so different. It wasn't the happy place Sara remembered with flowers and plants to welcome them. It was Papa’s laugh she missed, and the smell of Gram’s chocolate chip cookies.

"I don't know about this," Sara hesitated while unpacking.

"It'll be fun!" Her sister was in her cutoffs and a bikini top with a white shirt barely covering her. She was ready for the beach.

"Sure!" Sara faked a smile as if she were here for her sister. Sara was in her jeans, her favorite  THE SMITHS tee, and sneakers. Sara tried to unlock the door, but it was already unlocked. "Nina, did you know about this?"

"What?" Her sister was in her little world of belongings, but Sara felt cold as if trouble was behind that door. Suddenly, she felt a jolt of panic.

"It's unlocked. Should we call someone?" Sara glared at her sister.

"Who would we call?" Her sister squinted. "Stop being paranoid."

She marched up the steps to the door and pushed it open. It was bright and sunny outside, but dark inside the beachhouse.

Sara remained even-tempered. Nina switched on the light, but there was no power.

"Are you serious?" Sara sighed. She'd brought pasta and fresh tomatoes to show off some of her cooking skills. Now they would have to make do with sausage sticks, tomatoes, a loaf of French bread, and olive oil.

"Oh, we'll survive," she said, pulling the curtains open to let in the sun. Still, Sara thought this was going to be a very long night, but she did her part, bringing in the luggage and seeing what she could do in the kitchen. At least there was running water, but it was cold.

"We could just camp on the beach tonight," her sister said with enthusiasm.

"Can we make it any more of a disaster than it already is?" Sara felt her true colors flaring. How could her sister be so congenial? Sara thought they should go into town and get a room. At least find a place to eat. Sara’s stomach grumbled. Nina hadn’t stopped for anything but to get here, and now Sara wasn’t sure if she could use the toilet without it exploding.

The place needed a lot of love, but Sara hadn’t packed for that.

"You've had it too good! You know that!" Nina snapped.

"What are you talking about?" Sara's straight-lip soured. "Did you know this would happen?"

Her sister hugged herself. "What if I did?" She snarled back.

"Well-" Sara’s brow furrowed. Did her sister hate her that much?

Nina was in a huff. She raked her fingers through her silky hair. "I'm supposed to be married."

Sara gritted. “I know you’re hurt, but isn’t it a good thing it happened now instead of later?”

Nina swelled a frown.

“I know you love this place, you always have.”

Sara knew Nina always felt free here. There was the beach, the sea breeze, and the waves. But Sara was certain they needed to find some help. This was not the way she wanted to spend the week with her sister.

“We’ll go to town,” Sara looped her arm around Nina’s. “We need to get the lock fixed and find out about the power. What’s going on here?” Sara put on her best smile. She hated it here, but she couldn’t let on. “Let's get some wine.”

“Now you’re talking,” her sister laughed.

“And I’ll drive,” Sara knew it was best if her sister let her be the navigator for a while.

OC RP -Nav

Let's say I never spent a 4th of July quite like I did with Dakota. I've never been around that many friends either. It was good to be in a group. Of course, I had to see my ex and her new guy, too. But I don't think Dakota noticed. After all, Mia and I are strangers now. Although her new boy is a classmate and well..I didn't say hello to him, either. I just kept running with it with Dakota. I smiled at everything she said and just kept talking. Of course, we didn't hold hands. And I dunno if she would want to. What if I'm not her type?

I don't know. I'm in no hurry. If all we are are friends, that's a good thing, right?

There was a time I thought I might marry Mia. I don't know what got into me. There are so many obstacles that one doesn't even realise. Like my mother. And of course, trying to finish at the Uni to be in the medical program was suffocating. I know it was just a fantasy, thinking Mia would be the one.

Yes, it was an exhausting time, but I was so smitten with Mia. Now I am sure she is glad I gave it up. I wasn't much better than Ezra. Yeah, it makes me smile when I see how Ezra follows Fiona around like a loyal pup. I was that way to Mia, too.

Now I just take one day at a time. And these days, I don't have a whole lot of time to ponder, with the Complex and, of course, the rides at the carnival always needing me for something.

BTW, I hear the carnival will be going strong all the way into September. Usually, it goes on hiatus in August, but due to global warming and a surge in tourism, why not?

And I'm pleased I could help Dakota get that job. It looks like it's gonna happen. Of course, the director asked why I wasn't working there. I know I should, but I feel too busy as it is.

Still, it's good to have Dakota to talk to. I hope she'll like it at the assisted living place. And I hope we have more group outings too. Even if it's right here at the Complex

OC RP - Fiona

It's gonna get better. I swear I'm gonna be better. I have. Yeah, I know, not much of a mantra, but I know I worried Dakota.

God knows, what she thinks of me now. Why! Why, oh why! Did I even tell her about Austin (squints eyes shut) I think that's his name. I don't know anymore. I don't know anything anymore. Yeah, that's the ticket. Keep telling myself this shit. I'll probably never see him anyway..so who cares. Right?

This past week has been endless. I made sure to use the alarm on my phone like Dakota said. She's got it all figured out. And I did pick up some yogurts from the Complex building, where people drop off free stuff they don't want anymore. It's not exactly a food pantry, but sort of. And that's helped. Personally, I wonder if Dakota dropped off the yogurt. [I should not be worried about this shit..I know I sound like I  have a split personality or something..but really I don't. I swear.]

REMINDER: START A SWEAR JAR! [Do I have to do that? I really can't afford it.]

Anyway...the 4th was pretty sweet. Friends showed up. Dakota and Nav. Of course, Ezra, and we met these sisters along the way to the boardwalk, and we hung out. You know, talked about shit at the complex how those old Golden Girls keep asking us over, but we never go.

It was a great start to the evening. I ate junk food and watched Ezra try to wow me with his winning streak. Yeah, I just got the tokens. It added up. I got a big bottle of wine. Of course, I was very responsible. I made him carry it home. And it's in the fridge. I promised I would just keep it there. You know, see how long I can keep it without drinking it. [I saw something  like that in a K-drama, so I'm gonna try it.]

It was Ezra's keen idea since he's not old enough to legally drink.  Oh, the things he talks me into. I know he'd rather I'd just taken all those little stuffed animals, but that's not me. He should be happy that He didn't have to carry that jug of wine to the Ferris Wheel. I tried not to be bossy, but it didn't last long.

I know I should be nicer. Kinder. He puts up with a lot of shit with me, but I just don't want us to get too close. I just know some nerdy girl has her eye on him, and I would hate for him to miss out on that. I think, anyway. Maybe.

But he was so Ezra. Now that I think about it, maybe he's been talking to Dakota. The two of them would never just hang out. Together. Right?

It would have been the perfect night, but then my mom called when I got home. She told me about my cousin Cody. She said he died of an overdose. I have not seen him since..oh God.. so many Christmases ago at my grandparents. I was so sad to hear about him. I was so worried he'd gotten washed away in one of those flooded rivers in Texas because he lived in Kerrville. So, yeah, I wasn't myself, and I know Ezra was afraid that I would be alone with the wine.

I didn't know Cody well. And now that my parents are split up because mom stopped taking her bipolar meds, things aren't like they used to be.

I know, I could be living with my Dad right now, but he needs to be alone, and I'm afraid he wants me on meds, too.

I don't even know what Cody's addiction was, or even where it happened.  Maybe I shouldn't know.

So..so Ezra spent the night. This meant, squeezing together so we could both watch JAWS I and II on my laptop. Yeah, maybe not the best idea.

OC RP - Dakota

Sometimes, I wonder about myself. I might not be any help to anyone, and still I try. I don't even have siblings, yet I find myself in Big Sister mode when it comes to Fiona.

Yes, texting Ezra was not a good idea. It didn't help any that I had to get his number from Nav which meant, talking Nav into going to the Fireworks with me at the boardwalk on the 4th of July.

And then the endless texting with Ezra. What did I get myself into? I didn't want to tell him everything about Fiona. I just said, maybe she wasn't ready to be on her own.

Bad mistake..bad..bad mistake.

I kept telling him to worry about himself, after all his pondering, "What do you mean?" questions.

In the end, I just said, "We'll do more things together." What else could I say?

I applied to the Assisted Living Place, and I used Nav as a reference, which helped a lot. I am thankful for knowing him. And finally, oh finally, I got to meet Alex. Who is amazing with cars. And Alex didn't charge me an arm and a leg.

It was good to meet Alex, who was very informative about taking care of a car.

Finally, when the 4th rolled around, we all met up for hot dogs on the crowded boardwalk. Thankfully, I only ate one, because a second one would have made me throw up. I couldn't deal with the cotton candy and other treats like Fiona.

After a couple of games at the different booths and arcades, we settled down to pair up. Nav and I went together on the Ferris Wheel (our final ride). Before that, it was the bumper cars and the Tilt-a-Twirl. Honestly, I hadn't imagined this much fun on the 4th. Thank God for a sea breeze, or it might have been a different night.

Thankfully, there was laughter and fun, and it was great not being under any influence, except the night and the beautiful fireworks.

OC RP - Ezra

Suddenly, it hit Ezra how alone he was. Just like his grandmother. Why had they left her alone like that?

He remembered the arguments. It seemed no one in the family could make any decisions. No one really wanted to take on the responsibility until they had to. He looked at the smashed bathroom. Was that what his family thought of him, as well?

"Why so glum?" Han was still here.

"Don't you ever go home?"

Ezra squinted miserably. He felt so alone, and yet there was his friend Han always hanging around.

"I like it here?" He smiled as if maybe it was Ezra visiting, not the other way around. "Look, you're gonna get it fixed. Nav knows stuff."

Ezra nodded and faked a smile. "Go home." Ezra brushed him off with a scat. "NOW."

"OK."

Han shrank back and got his stuff to go. Of course, he told him he'd be back tomorrow. "I hope you'll be in a better mood."

"Why should I?"

Ezra gave his friend the evil eye. Didn't Han know, nothing was going his way? Especially, wth Fiona? Finally, when he was alone, he fell into his little bed. It was muggy. He sat up and clicked on the fan. No way was he going to let Han in on how he lived.

He jerked off his shirt and waited to cool down. He had to stop thinking about Fiona, but she went off with Dakota. What was that about?

He closed his eyes, and did his best to breathe in and out and to meditate. And hoped he didn't have to go to the building where the bathrooms and showers were.  He yawned restlessly. Yeah, maybe he'd drop off any second.

He got a ding on his phone. He reached for his phone, which was next to him. He took a look. "Who in the hell is this?" He rose up on his elbows. Finally, he realized it was a text from Dakota.

He scowled. He didn't remember giving her his number.

OC RP - Nav

Nav was worried. He wasn't sure why. Maybe it had to do that Dakota never showed up that night when  Han and Ezra came back to his place.

It was good, having people over. He guessed. Although he wasn't one for entertaining. Most of his life was spent studying until now. Still, there was work to tend to, but there was a little time to get to know the boys.

They were younger. Still had time to plan their goals. Han seemed interested in his documentaries. Ezra was quiet.

Nav said he'd check out Ezra's bathroom situation. Ezra definitely needed a bathroom at his place.Nav  felt bad that no one had fixed it yet.

"What do think the problem is?" Nav asked and naturally, Ezra didn't have a clue. So he went over to check it out.

Yeah, the bathroom was a wreck. The commode didn't work. The shower needed some care. Even what little of the vanity was left was a smashed mirror.

"And your grandmother did all that?" Nav was shocked.

"Yeah, that's what they said," Ezra shrugged, hugging himself as if he hated anyone to know what his place really looked like.

"I'll call around." Maybe he could fix it up for about three hundred. He knew where to go for a new commode and maybe he could thrift a mirror. The shower just needed a new shower head. "It'll be OK."

Ezra was still straight-lipped. Han of course, wanted to film the whole thing, but Nav halted that.

Nav knew who Ezra really wanted to talk to. Maybe Nav wanted just as much to talk to Dakota. He hoped she applied for the job he mentioned to her.
