Moonlight Sonata Prompt

Was this truly December? It was a bitter cold. I swear I could taste poison on my breath. No way did I want to leave so late from the grocery store.

Christmas, what's it good for?

Damn, if I wasn't back home with that brother of mine and that bickering wife of his.

Actually, I felt sorry for him in the beginning, but I dunno, why didn't he run when he had a chance?

There wasn't much to be happy about. I was not to be trusted after the incident at work. I guess it's no place for swords. But I'm pretty sure that co-worker Freddie is a serial killer in his free time, or at least a werewolf. When I said he smelled like the dead, no one believed me. It was just me.

Someone said I was delusional and another thought I might be bipolar. Naturally, they didn't find anything wrong with me. And my girlfriend Luna might have put a spell on me that went wrong. She complained I wasn't as playful as I used to be.

So when Dale invited me home for the holidays, it meant moving into the shed out back. But I didn't really mind. Yeah, winter was a cold mother, and as freezing as it got I just got a little tighter in my sleeping bag and made the best of it.

Only, I didn't want to hit the sack just yet. I needed a drink perhaps to warm my insides before I bedded down.

I stopped by Pete's bar and watched some old farts play darts while I nursed on my own drink. which is two-part tequila, one-part vodka, triple sec, and lime juice. It's not really my winter drink, but then again, I don't guess I have one.

Pete talked for a while about giving me some part-time through the new year so to keep me out of trouble. I watched him rinse the mugs and glasses in hot water to let them drip dry from the ceiling. It didn't really look like he needed any help, but since he was a friend of my late father's I guess he was on uncle duty.

"Well, that's might nice of you, and all, but I don't know, if I'll even be around," I smiled back as if that warm feeling of liquor was consuming me and I was only on my second drink.

"Where you going, Molly?" He asked with that toothpick twitching in the corner of his lip.

"Hard to say," I shook my head, but I knew my days were numbered at my brother's. We'd get in a fight and one of us might end up jail and the other dead. I used to jump trains when I was younger. But it had been a while. Just a possibility to think on.

"You should move on, not much here in this hick town for you."

This was a shock to hear out in West Oklahoma. Most said this was the place to be. It was a wide open space and far from the city.

"Well, Pamida has been good to me," I nodded about the place that hired me. Not all was lost. Of course, there was a lot of family I missed like Momma and Daddy. True, it just wasn't the same being home again. Damn, if he didn't make me a little teary-eyed when I left.

I didn't have far to go. And the moon did look spectacular. It was so close. I was beginning to think it might be something else. I stared at it, thinking maybe it was made of cheese, or was I seeing people the size of ants on the moon?

Slowly, the snow started like little fairies all quiet, fluttering around me. It wasn't long until a blanket of white began on my walk home.

My hands were bare and cold, but I was hot with the steam coming off me. Though, my hair was covered in snowflakes. It was like I was part of nature. It made me laugh. The hot tears emerged just when I least expected.

With watery eyes, I begin to see things change. First, it was like a Nirvana of some kind in the blue, green, and purple atmosphere. But even in the moonlight, I was certain I could only see it as I past the old park where my brother played baseball games as a youngster.

My legs didn't move very fast in the heavy snow. Although, I didn't mind. It was as if something was pulling me back, but somehow I was afraid to look and see what it was, yet the force was mesmerizing, and if I told anyone this sensation that plunged to the core of me that it might have been the best sex I ever had..I'm sure they'd laugh.

I laughed so that I fell back in the snow and started my own snow angel. The sky was perfect with a midnight rainbow of colors. I was certain it was getting me ready for something so I closed my eyes.

"Well, well, it's been a long time," said a quaint voice, but I knew it wasn't Luna because it was deep and sounded a little foreign, maybe even indigenous.

I shot my eyes open, and saw his smiling smart-ass face. Then I squinted wondering who could it be?

He was thin with pointy boots. He hugged himself as if he didn't like this weather as much as I did.

"An invisible friend?" I asked.

He laughed. "Is that what you've been telling people these days?"

I rose on my elbows.

"Maybe."

"You know, I saved you from that motorcycle accident you almost had," he shrugged.

"Motorcycle accident?" I scowled. "When was that?"

"See, you don't even remember. I'm that good."

He laughed as if he might be Saint Nick himself.

"Is this my version of a Wonderful Life?" I wanted to know as he helped me up.

He pointed to the spaceship he came in. It wasn't much more than Doctor Who's phone booth. I didn't think it could hold the both of us.

"Oh, you'll remember."

He looped his arm around mine.

"Will I?"

"Remember, the time you fell in the well?"

"Not really." I winced.

"We had to leave you there so no one would know you'd been away for a while."

"Oh." More secrets I didn't know.

"You know, this was just your earth family." He promised things would get better when we got back to our planet. "I don't know why you wanted to do this experiment, anyway. People are crazy here."
