Water for Elephants - movie review

as one tumblr put it, robert looks pretty good in the sun doing man's work.

so nostalgic costuming and color

If this had been Robert Pattinson's first major motion picture, we might look at him differently. We might see that genuine smile of his in a totally different light. We might even take him seriously as an actor. Personally, I wish this had been his first film.

The movie is a slice of Americana. Its a movie that shows how our country was built. How an ocean of immigrants made this country bold and beautiful. There was a time when the train was the motivation of transportation. And I love how the train is possibly its own character in the film, as well. The cinematography is beautiful. The costuming grand. It all builds to the magnitude of the Big Top Circus. The hunger of men in a time of the great depression.

Some might be put off with Reese Witherspoon, but I can't think of anyone better in her part as Marlena. As always, she has a way of making her leading man look all the more loveable. She was great with the animals to, in the film.

Of course, it was Christoph Waltz who stole the movie who ran the circus and its people as August. He is such an amazing actor. He exposes so many sides of one character just in a small gesture of a smile. No wonder he got an Oscar.

Lets not neglect Mark Povinelli as Kinko. He was wonderful as one of the circus people. If there is someone who needs to be a leading man, its Povinelli.

The film might not have covered all the side stories from the book, but it did have a special place for Rosie, the elephant. Her role is delightful. I thought the film went along smoothly. I liked the chemistry between Witherspoon and Pattinson. Really, I think its one of the better films of this year.

  3. I absolutely LOVED this movie! And this is coming from someone who usually critiques movies made from books to no end, haha. But really, this was fantastic. And I totally agree about Robert Pattinson. If he had done Harry Potter and then this movie and not ever been involved in Twilight, I would think about him completely differently. I actually loved him in this, a lot. Stupid Twilight, ruining good actors... mumble grumble... haha.

  9. Ah the elephant photos make me smile because they remind me of a recent conversation I had with my sister who is in Thailand. She told me that the elephants smell so bad and my mom agreed from her memories of travelling there too!
