Why post this on Mother's day..you might ask..Well, you might have to watch closely, or you might miss it, but there is something special about Mother..in this film. Maybe.
This is a film directed by Joel Schumacher based on Nick McDonnell who wrote this novel (very controversial) when he was just 17. Some, might feel the book was hype over substance..maybe even the movie too. But you have the narrative by Keifer Sutherland and a very beautiful cast.
True, I've always felt there was lot to be desired by Chace Crawford as just the pretty poster boy on Gossip Girl, but he does give a hearty performance in the film as the main character White Mike who has quit school after the death of his mother and sells drugs to his rich classmates.
Of course, the real performances come from Rory Culkin and Billy Magnussen as brothers from a rich family who's parents aren't home. Billy's Claude goes off the deep end at a party, that changes everything. Really, though, the film is quite complicated. Unfortunately. Still, there are some intense moments. Philips Ettinger's Hunter who is White Mike's closest thing to a brother.. gets mixed up in murder just because of a fight he was in. Somehow, he gets lost in the story, but I really was interested in his character. There is also Emily Meade who is the one who just has to have more of the drug TWELVE and gets mixed up with 50 Cents' character. So many side stories going. Perhaps too many.
But the real story here is of a boy who loses his mother to breast cancer. And a mother who loses a son because he saw too much. Jermaine Crawford's character Nana was at the wrong place at the wrong time, minding his own business.

This is a story that takes you on a ride from the rich kids of New York to those trying to get by. Esti Ginzburg's Sara keeps saying she has a lot of boyfriends, but she's not a slut. The movie definitely has a lot to get to. At times, you wonder just what holds it together. Truly, I think it was Cory Culkin that held this movie together.
a defining moment in the movie |
I won't say its a great movie. Still, it has a lot to offer even if I thought the narration was over done. There is so much in it, you might need to watch it twice. Of course, some might not make it through once. It depends on you. But after seeing this movie, I'd so love to see Phillip Ettinger as the main character in a movie (There is something Logan Huffman about him. Seriously, get him and Thomas McDonnell as the main three in a movie..and you just might have a movie worth watching). Of course, there are bits by Thomas McDonnell and Nico Tortorella that I'd love to see again. Zoe Kravitz and Chanel Farrell also add their style to the film.
Storyline: A young drug dealer watches as his high-rolling life is dismantled in the wake of his cousin's murder, which sees his best friend arrested for the crime.
Tumblr thanks!
I absolutely adore you for posting this review, as I have been wanting to see this film. I am a huge fan of both Emma Roberts and Chace Crawford, and think that it sounds fantastic. Maybe I'll even read the book! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I'll watch Chace in anything. And what a wow cast. Amazing. Cool review!
ReplyDeleteTotally love this film.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of this, but it looks interesting!
ReplyDeleteRory Culkin looks so much like his brother. I haven't seen Chase Crawford in anything other than Gossip Girl actually. It sounds like an interesting book/movie though, written by a 17 year old!
ReplyDeletegreat.
