I so wanted them to kiss and makeout! |
I must say, this is one of the best bromances of the year between James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender (who definitely should play John Hamm's brother in the future) as Xavier and Erik. Of course, Fassbender shows his dark side. Meanwhile, McAvoy has a way of being the most caring person on earth. Add the beautiful Rose Byrne as the CIA agent..you've got a pretty good start for an action packed film.
I must add the movie is beautifully cast. Nicholas Hoult certainly puts the N in nerd that you want to love. His 'Hank' is definitely complex with being a genius and a mutant. But even so, with all those smarts, things can go wrong in the lab. Jennifer Lawerence as blue Mystic is quite blue for most of the film. Not in makeup...but her character never quite liking her true self. What gets complicated is her flirt. Is it for Hank or is she completely smittened by the older and cold hearted Erik?
There is troubled Havok who can't channel his 'gift' played by Lucus Till. He could be the next Matt Damon, perhaps. Of course, all the students have problems with their talents. They just don't know how. But you have Xavier to help them. As he does so for Erik, too.
Yes, those two have a moment or two. Even if its mental, its quite fun to watch. Yet emotional too.
Added to the first class group is street smart Angel Salvadore played by Zoe Kravitz who I wished could have been in the film more. But who stole the movie for me, was a little known actor, Caleb Landry Jones as Banshee. He was so fun in the movie. Another redhead to watch for.
Seriously, though you've got some great villian to empower the movie. Kevin Bacon certainly does a remarkable job as Sebastian Shaw. He speaks in German. In Russian. He has a lot of power when it comes to being a mutant. And he's got January Jones by his side as Emma Frost.

I thought most of the action scenes were done, great. I especially loved the magnitude of the crash scenes. And many of the flying scenes, as well. There is a bit of humor, through the movie that will give you a chuckle, but it portrays Erik's dark world as well with such deep emotion.
To some, I'm sure the movie will not full fill every need of the comic book, but it does its best to keep you on this fast ride of a summer flick that will make one want to inhale their popcorn. Its a great way to get June into action at the theater.
STORYLINE: Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-MEN.
credits!
