Blogger Zombie Walk

ZOMBIE OUT-REACH by Ivy Parker

God, they are so sneaky. You'd think I would have seen them coming. You know, how they walk all jerky. Not exactly like that dance number in thriller. Zombies are faster than they appear.

Who would have thought it would have happen to me? There on the street. I'd just grabbed blue Slurpee. from the local Casey's. No power at the house. I needed corn-nuts.

Instead... I'm tangled up in some old dude's bony grasp. Next thing I know..I'm being ripped at the shoulder. And yeah, its all suppose to end like a scene in Zombieland, but didn't.

I know what you're thinking, when you're a zombie, you just become this flesh eating thing. Nobody tells you, how it creeps up on you, how your body gets stiff. Your limbs just don't want to work unless you drag yourself around. And burgers, not at all tastey. Worms, I tell you. The taste of squirmy worms. DISGUSTING.

"You got it... don't you?" A strange girl, hardly breathing stood by me while I was making horrid faces at my burger. You know, you get the munchies after you've been bitten.

"Got what?" I wasn't very good at this sort of thing, with or without this sickness.

"What's your name?" She plopped herself next to me.

"Zane." I looked her over, she was as pale as me. Yeap, I read the rule later, we go in packs.

"I never met a Zane." She weakly smiled and told me her name was Caddie. "You should come with me."

I shook my head, no. I was never much for youth group or any of those clubs.

"We have to stick together." Her hand practically melted in mine. We were kind of stuck. And since I didn't exactly have cable at home, anymore. ..the whole city was growing dim. What did I have to lose?

Zombie Rule #1: Ability to run is based on the amount of time a zombie has been undead, and how much decay has set in.

Zombie Rule #2: Zombies decay but at a much slower rate than humans, and it’s still possible to differentiate between young and old zombies.

Zombie Rule #3: Zombies are like lions: if they’ve eaten, you can walk by them without fear, but a pack of hungry zombies will attack you.

Zombie Rule #4: The quickest speed of any zombie is a shambling run. see Night of the Living Dead. NO sprinters exist.

Zombie Rule #5: Zombies are not dexterous. They cannot pick up or use any items more complex than a rock or a stick.

Zombie Rule #6: Zombies have poor eyesight but they do have a strong sense of smell.

Zombie Rule #7: Zombies cannot speak but can communicate by pack mentality. The herd tends to move together if they sight food.

Zombie Rule #8: There is no overt recognition of people or places, there is a sense of familiarity that can dictate where a zombie moves.

Zombie Rule #9: There’s no known cause of the zombie mutation, but it’s suspected to be a virus or infection.

Zombie Rule #10: Once you’re bitten you’ll die and reanimate as a walker. How long it takes is related to the nature your bite.

"Now when did you wake up?" Apparently, you have an 8 hour window before complete reanimation. There was a study on it, but evidently it was too late for me to be in the new study. Some pre-reanimaters were being put in hibernation in event of an apocalypse. At least I got to take a pill. It was to help my soul more than anything else.

"I wish it wasn't so late for us..." Caddie held my hand as if she was in this with me. We'd just met, but it felt like everything was moving so fast. If only we'd had just a moment to kiss. It was even too late for that. We were both getting so old, flaky flesh and all. It was like we were our great-grand parents.

"Wish we had different tasks than just walkers." I was a little glum about it, wondering how bad it would be to be a full-fledge zombie.

"I know, but zombies can't swim or climb." At least our mouths could still move, but as the minutes went by it was even harder to make the words come out.  Finally, it occurred to me. I was stuck. Worse than cement. I wasn't going to get out of this, was I?

My brain was closing in to a fog. There was only one thing on my brain. Fresh meat. Human. I could barely think. I was losing the battle here.

In seconds, all I could hear was a moan from Caddie. I moaned back as if I understood completely. But I didn't. Perhaps I was on auto-pilot.

Suddenly, the garage door lifted in the old warehouse of the make-shift Zombie Out-Reach, the sunlight came blazing in. There was only one thing to do. Keep moving.
