I've never seen Ryan Gosling quite like this. Granted, he always surprises me. And this was definitely a surprise. Even more of a surprise, the gritty performance of Albert Brooks.
Its a man's film, exposing the dark and dirty side of L.A. What it takes for a man to get by in many forms, I might add. Its a love story too, but like none other I've ever quite imagined. And I must say I do ship Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan together. Don't go thinking you'll see gripping sexy scenes. Its far above that sort of thing.
His jacket with the scorpion on the back goes through a lot. |
Yes, the driver (Gosling who's character is only known by that name) loves waitress Irene, but he goes the distance. He's a neighbor who helps her and her young son. Even when her husband (Oscar Issac) comes back, he's still there waiting to help.
Gosling's character has a day job being a part-time stunt driver in movies and works for retired stuntman Shannon (Brian Cranston). Of course, Shannon wants to get Gosling in a race car life, only Gosling has night time activities too. He drives for those in need for bank jobs and the likes. And it all falls to pieces when he takes the wrong job.
The movie is fast paced. Gosling's character doesn't say much. And you get the feel that his complex character is genuinely good. Although, the life he gets into, he takes on what he has to.
The soundtrack is also pulsating which adds even more to the film. Yet, there is a silence in one part that just makes the scene more intense. Hearty performances from Ron Perlman, Brian Cranston and Albert Brooks. This film has so much depth. The director Nicolas Winding Refn, won Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival, and now we know why.
STORYLINE: A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong.
