Fiction Tuesday-Getting over Garrett Delaney

Can a twelve-step program help Sadie kick her unrequited crush for good? Abby McDonald serves up
her trademark wit and wisdom in a hilarious new novel.

Summary: Seventeen-year-old Sadie is in love: epic, heartfelt, and utterly onesided. The object of her obsession - ahem, affection - is her best friend, Garrett Delaney, who has been oblivious to Sadie's
feelings ever since he sauntered into her life and wowed her with his passion for Proust (not to mention his deep-blue eyes). For two long, painful years, Sadie has been Garrett's constant companion, sharing his taste in everything from tragic Russian literature to art films to '80s indie rock
- all to no avail. But when Garrett leaves for a summer literary retreat, Sadie is sure that the absence will make his heart grow fonder - until he calls to say he's fallen in love. With some other girl! A heartbroken Sadie realizes that she's finally had enough. It's time for total Garrett detox! Aided by a barista job, an eclectic crew of new friends (including the hunky chef, Josh), and a customized selfhelp guide, Sadie embarks on a summer of personal reinvention full of laughter, mortifying meltdowns, and a double shot of love.

Matt Prokop & Sarah Hyland would be a good Garrett & Sadie in my dreamcast.

Honestly, I've never read a story quite like this, but its hearty and wise Young Adult fiction to read. And I could relate to Sadie's predicament. She's smitten with Garrett at first glance. He's adorable and quite the literary fellow. Soon enough, they are best friends. Yet, they can't seem to get past that. After awhile, she's just a sidekick. He keeps falling in love with this drama queens and that literary vixens, but she's still his best friend.

Yet, things change when they don't get to the same literary camp they'd signed up for. The autho,r Abby McDonald has a way of getting you into the story about how Sadie has waited so long to hear from Garrett ...those I LOVE YOU's..just to find out.."Sadie..I have something to tell you..I've fallen in love, again...."

“Just because they were soul mates doesn’t mean they had to last forever. Just because they felt true love doesn’t mean they couldn’t have a new life after that love was over.

So Sadie is on her own. Luckily, she  finds an unlikely position at her favorite coffee shop, Totally Wired, where she and Garrett always hang out. As the summer gets going, She realizes what a fool she's been for Garrett. Sadie decides to detox herself from him.

What I like about the story is how she finally thinks about her friendship with the girl across the street and how perhaps Garrett kept her from being friends with her. Finally, Sadie gets the 311 on Garrett from Kayla, how maybe Garrett wasn't as perfect as she thought he was.

The book has some warm and funny characters who Sadie works with at Totally Wired. There, she meets Josh the cook, who is a little older than her and undecided about what he wants to do some day. He's quite laid back, but they strike up a friendship, as she does with older and wiser LuAnn.

Slowly, Sadie lets Garrett go. Of course, he's oblivious to all of this. After all, he is a guy who might be a bit self-absorbed and lives life the way he wants too. In return, he is a lot like Sadie's divorced dad. Who isn't always there for her, either.

I really liked how this book made it very relate-able how we comprise ourselves in relationships and even friendships, transforming us in who we are. Do we form ourselves through what others want us to like and dislike?

This has to be one of favorite YA fiction books this year.

  1. This book looks like something I would like, I really love Meg Cabbot books and this looks a lot like something she would write.

That girl looks like she could be Jackie from that 70's show's little sister.
