Fiction Tuesday- Fifty shades of grey

Its a trilogy for the mature woman. This book has been hot on the trail of many book clubs, or the escape of many who want to take a break from studying or a ride home from work. Maybe even staying up all night to finish it.

When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.

Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.-book description

Some psychologists and therapists disapprove of this book. You can't find it in all libraries, either. With that in mind, it makes it a hot comity to some. Yes, there is some controversy over the book's literary value and what it says about women. And is it really what they want?

E L James is a TV executive, wife and mother of two, based in West London. Since early childhood, she dreamt of writing stories that readers would fall in love with, but put those dreams on hold to focus on her family and her career. She finally plucked up the courage to put pen to paper with her first novel, Fifty Shades of Grey.-Amazon

Sometimes I wonder if there’s something wrong with me. Perhaps I’ve spent too long in the company of my literary romantic heroes, and consequently my ideals and expectations are far too high.

"The book's protagonist is college student Anastasia, who has never had sex or even "touched herself." I had to suspend disbelief at the social and sexual naivete of this twenty-one year-old, but I guess this implied vulnerability makes her more attractive as a romantic heroine. Yet it doesn't take her long to rectify this situation, and soon she is having orgasm after orgasm at the behest of her "dominant" partner, Mr. Grey."-David Shobin

"E.L. James’s Twilight fan fiction turned best-selling e-book Fifty Shades of Grey was recently optioned for a reported $5 million by Universal Pictures, and 575,000 paperback copies hit U.S. stores today. When I heard this, I hadn’t yet read the book, but I was nonetheless a little tempted."-Cleolinda

However, this book could be a hit or a miss. Not everyone is going to be fascinated by the story.

"Since I post a lot from the Young Adult genre on here, I want to start by saying that this book is not for young adults. Also, I know there is a lot of controversy surrounding this book  because of the Twilight fan fiction. I am not going to get into that in this review, I am simply going to focus on what I thought of the book in and of itself. I wanted to read the book because I was curious about the hype and wanted to see if it lived up to this hype.

I honestly do not know how I feel about this book. On one hand, some of it appalled me but on the other hand I was thoroughly intrigued. I could not and would not put this book down. At one moment I loved Christian and the next I wanted to kill him. The book messed with my mind. I would go from rooting for Christian and Ana to work things out to telling Ana to run for the hills in the blink of an eye. It is clear that Christian has a lot of issues that need to be worked out."-readerslivea1000lives

a beautiful mess

~ The writing was too sterile. There was no depth and I found it hard connecting to any of it. There was a whole heap of - I touched him, he touched me, I did this, he did that. And it wasn't engaging at all.
When I read I want to be able to feel the emotion, not be told how a scene is playing out as if the heroine is actually an observer.

~ The sex - it wasn't hot at all. I wouldn't even classify it as erotic. For some strange reason I have the opinion that you need to be able to refer to your vagina as something more erotic than 'down there' before you can pull off a significant hotness rating.

~ Christian - ok, he was relatively hot but not enough to get my blood pumping. He wasn't alpha enough for me. One moment he is trying to be hard core the next he is gasping because she is wearing his underwear.
Now if that was my dominant alpha, he would have given me a cocky smile, licked his lips and gave that 'how you doin' look, But no, he gasped like a little girl.-RiverinaRomantics

Would Kristen & Roberts sign up for the movie?

'Yes, it’s badly written. Yes, it is based on Twilight fanfiction. Yes, the sex is over the top and the dialogue is just beyond anything real people would ever say, but I’m really tired of reading things about how I am inferior to others because I chose to  read this ridiculous book. Still, I have to wonder what the hoopla is all about. Do we, as women, really want men to dominate us? I think not. Yet, I'm sure we all want to take a peek and find out ourselves just why its a best seller.
