Detachment

DETACHMENT is one of those Don't stand so Close to me kind of movies. It stars Adrien Brody as the drifting substitute teacher. There is also newcomer Sami Gayle who poises a lot of intrigue in the film, as well.

"Detachment is possibly my favorite film of the last year.  It isn’t because it’s about a teacher, though the significance of that is not lost on me.  Rather, I like it because it asks pertinent questions about us, and doesn’t feel obliged to answer them.  Adrien Brody handles himself well in the part too, keeping his performance nuanced and subtle, rather than going for the pathetic throat.  While it’s certainly filled with bleak images, it doesn’t wallow or judge."-farmilo

"This isn’t a film that’ll make you want to become a teacher, unless you like being humiliated (everyone’s different I guess). It’s none the less a good film, it’s maybe a little bit too emotionally distressing, too everything’s wrong and it’ll never be better. But it still is a real portrait of people striving to do what they think they should do, failing, and trying still. Even though the progress they make is so minimal, so insignificant compared to their hardships.
The cinematography is good, it could have been great but it sometimes becomes too stylized and abandons the storyline/meaning, making me wonder why I’m watching this blurry close up. Also the film really could have done without the chalkboard drawings though…"-The Film Chronicals
