Ruby Sparks

I like it. It’s like the modern version of Pygmalion and Galatea story with a twist. She’s not a sculpture but a character made from a writer’s imagination. How awesome is that huh?-Jozelle

I've waited forever to see this movie. Since it has Paul Dana and his real life girlfriend, writer/actress Zoe Kazan in it. And with Nanowritemore in progress, perhaps some will appreciate this movie.

Paul is Calvin and he's a novelist. In fact he quit high school to write his first book and it was a sensation. But that was 10 years ago and he's in severe writer's block.

Of course, he has a wonderful California apartment, and a little dog named Scotty who he feels has emotional issues. Calvin has no friends. Just his brother who checks on him ever so often and a shrink he visits who he talks with about his father's death and bad breakup.

And then his shrink gives him a writing assignment. Calvin tells him it might be bad writing. The shrink says he doesn't care. Thus, he dreams up a girl (Zoe Kazan). Her name is Ruby who is from Dayton, Ohio. He just can't stop writing about her. I can't think of anyone else I'd rather watch at a type writer but Paul Dano. There is just something vulnerable about him.

Just don’t tell me how it ends, okay?

Soon he starts to think he's seeing things. His dog brings him a shoe. His brother wonders if he's had someone over. He finds undies on his couch. Calvin wakes up from his writing to find her in his house. Calvin is petrified. But someone like Ruby is not going away.

She questions him in her quirky way. Really, I thought Zoe was a delight in this film. She doesn't read much. She brings out the best in him. Well, at least for a while.

For the  most part the movie is very light and fun. Soon he finds out he can write to make her do things. I love the part where he made her want to need him. I've never seen anyone that clingy to anyone. Of course, things have to get dark before they get better.

Ruby is a part Calvin. There are thoughts of wondering how much we make up of our own romances, if we look at this closely. I loved the layers of this film. I can only hope Zoe Kazan will be in more films. I'm glad so many helped her put this little gem together. Its one of those films, if you appreciate indie films, you'll want a copy of this one in your DVD library.

STORYLINE: Calvin is a genius novelist who begins to type a new novel on his manual typewriter about Ruby, his dream girl. He can't believe his eyes, because the next day, Ruby becomes a real person, and they begin to have a beautiful relationship together. If the relationship isn't perfect, all Calvin has to do is simply type the words on the page and Ruby's actions change to what he needs.

This is the true and impossible story of my very great love. In the hope that she will not read this and reproach me, I have withheld many telling details: her name, the particulars of her birth and upbringing, and any identifying scars or birth marks. All the same, I cannot help but write this for her, to tell her “I’m sorry for every word I wrote to change you, I’m sorry for so many things. I couldn’t see you when you were here and, now that you’re gone, I see you everywhere.” One may read this and think it’s magic, but falling in love is an act of magic, so is writing. It was once said of Catcher In The Rye, “That rare miracle of fiction has again come to pass: a human being has been created out of ink, paper and the imagination.” I am no J.D. Salinger, but I have witnessed a rare miracle. Any writer can attest: in the luckiest, happiest state, the words are not coming from you, but through you. She came to me wholly herself, I was just lucky enough to be there to catch her.
