Beasts of the Southern Wild

In a million years, when kids go to school, they’re gonna know: Once there was a Hushpuppy, and she lived with her daddy in The Bathtub. (Beasts of the Southern Wild, 2012)
I don't know how she did it, but Quvenshane Wallis as Hushpuppy has way of stealing your heart.

What a lovely film, fuelled by imagination and coloured by rich textures. Kind of like a mix of Terence Malick and Terry Gilliam at times. The young protagonist is a wonderful creation and getting to see the world through her eyes for 90 minutes was a real pleasure.-Ross

Beasts of the Southern Wild: “Once There Was a Hushpuppy (Live)”
It cannot be overstated how much I love this song. Just when I thought I couldn’t openly weep over it anymore. Gorgeous. Fields upon fields. The light coming in slats. Touching my chest, making me gold. Nothing but hope. All my hearts turned skyward. Birds flying through me. That is what this song is.

Also, Benh Zeitlin playing the banjo is among the most precious of things.-Dalton

Without a doubt, this has to be my favorite movie this year. This is one of those movies where its such a rich history that exist even in our modern times of people living off the river and land just like the ancestors before them. It was definitely a story that told the cycle of life. And the music score was beautiful too. Ivy

The entire universe depended on everything fitting together just right…

Everybody loses the thing that made them. The brave men stay and watch it happen. They don’t run.

Let’s face it, they’ve handed out enough awards to people of color in the last few years, so you should expect the five nominees for Best Actor to be from movies like Argo, The Master, Lincoln, et cetera. It’s a shame, however, because Henry’s performance broke my heart.

STORYLINE: Hushpuppy, an intrepid six-year-old girl, lives with her father, Wink, in the Bathtub, a southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink's tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe; for a time when he's no longer there to protect her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, nature flies out of whack, temperatures rise, and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With the waters rising, the aurochs coming, and Wink's health fading, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother.
