The Spectacular Now

Its got the buzz at the Sundance festival.

There's Miles Teller at Sutter, the protagonist who finds himself strangely infatuated with social outcast Aimee, played by Shailene Woodley. The second is Smashed, Ponsoldt's effective drama about the strain an alcoholic couple goes through when the wife decides to sober up, which generated dark-horse Oscar noms for Mary Elizabeth Winstead. I must ask, however, is there not an air of Not Another Teen Movie's Janey Briggs ugly duckling character in having Woodley play a homely misfit?-imdb

THE SPECTACULAR NOW / U.S.A. (Director: James Ponsoldt, Screenwriters: Scott Neustadter, Michael H. Weber) — Sutter is a high school senior who lives for the moment; Aimee is the introvert he attempts to “save.” As their relationship deepens, the lines between right and wrong, friendship and love, and “saving” and corrupting become inextricably blurred. Cast: Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley, Brie Larson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kyle Chandler.-sundance channel

Nick Hoult almost got the role of Sutter, but Miles Teller definitely shows he's an actor to be reckoning with since Rabbit Hole. Still you'll be seeing him in projects like 21 and Over.

"Woodley thoroughly fulfills the promise of her smaller role as the teenage daughter in “The Descendants,” locating the precise point at which Aimee’s infatuation with Sutter turns to self-protection.
Variety of Shailene’s performance in The Spectacular Now
Woodley captures Aimee’s shyness and vulnerability without pushing it on us. While she was excellent in The Descendants and deserving of the acclaim she received, this is a role that requires more maturity and nuance, and the results may again see her in awards company.-a fan
