AFTER EARTH

M. Night Shyamalan is back with Will and Jaden Smith who play a father and son team accidentally  on earth.

STORYLINE: One thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity's escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind's new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai. When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai's craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

THINGS IT GOT RIGHT: -POC everywhere! in positions of power!
-the accents they had were really interesting, and I wonder if this was an attempt to suggest that english, while prevailing, was not exclusive. i want a linguist on this
-his mother, while only a brief character has a sophisticated job that obviously requires a great deal of intelligence
-the dynamic between will and jaden, the acting; spot on
-beautiful, beautiful concept art
-scenery, gosh
-great use of heroic iconography and you know, really kind of a special moment because it’s applied to POC; like really, very “traditional” male hero things that are particularly exclusive to white (hetero, cis) men but with black characters. i am not going to get over this okay, it’s awesome.
-unisex military uniform (i’m looking at you star trek)
-beautiful costuming overall
-interesting organic design on the space ships; the inside of the ship looked like the skeleton of a whale and the materials were interesting and convincingly futuristic. also it was shaped like a sting ray, so i approve.-GEEK SMASH

TRIVIA: The original idea for the film was about a father and son on a camping trip. The son would've had to make his way through the forest to find help for the father after the car they were traveling in careened off the road. Realizing that the idea had greater potential, producer Will Smith and screenwriter Gary Whitta decided to adapt the basic survival concept into a much larger science-fiction project.

There’s been some criticism leveled at the latest M. Night Shyamalan film After Earth that accuses it of being nothing more than a shameless plug for Scientology. But whether or not that’s the truth, the film has far greater issues to worry about.  -levi

This really isn't an M. Night Shyamalan film, but he did direct it and of course we do, get a little bit of his flavor as to exposing the unknown.

Still, its been said this might be the worst ever script for a movie.

Cypher Raige: Fear is not real. It is a product of thoughts you create. Do not misunderstand me. Danger is very real. But fear is a choice.

went and saw After Earth with Andy tonight. Not how I expected it to go, but it was still really good. I was hoping for more Will Smith action, since he’s one of my favourite actors, but his son Jaden is growing on me too haha like father like son I guess-ssevi
