5. Another Max & Amber

 

How long could this go on? Amber didn't know what to make of Max. So  many surprises that just kept happening.

His concern for her backdoor was starting to creep her out. Kind of. 

Yes, he stayed for dinner. Here, she'd hoped to be in her pajamas already and in bed. It wasn't long after the meal of brisket, beans and salad that he called his uncle, who then showed up. Amber was certain he was here to pick him up, but no..it was just the beginning of the long process with the issue of the back door.

Naturally, the  old fellow took over and she heard Max mumble, "Why didn't you bring any tools?"

Amber only sighed. She went to see to her dog. He was definitely ready for his ME TIME. Actually, it was HER TIME and damn if Max wasn't taking up that precious space.

Naturally, they couldn't fix the door.

"Well, maybe I should stay," Max announced as if this was the right thing to do.

Amber spoke up then, "What do you think is going to happen?" She squinted hard ready to kick him in the knee or some other place to knock him down a notch.

"What if.." he sighed. " a drifter shows up."

"A drifter?" Now his uncle chimed in as if that was just ridiculous.

"Well, it could happen!" Max shot back.

"Thanks for your concern, but..but I'll be fine," Amber tilted her head wondering just what had she started. For as many hours as she'd spent with him, it felt like a year already. She didn't want to tell him about the fat butcher knife under her pillow. After all, she slept with a dog and a cat. They were her alarm system. "Besides, nothing ever happens out here."

"But  it could." He looked at her as if she wasn't thinking the obvious.
