Sun Wukong, (The Monkey King) is a monkey born from a heavenly stone who acquires supernatural powers. After rebelling against heaven and being imprisoned under a mountain for 500 years, he later accompanies the monk Xuanzang on a journey to India. Thus, according to legend, Buddhism is brought to ancient China. This much beloved story, is as much a part of Asian culture as The Iliad and The Odyssey or The Wizard of Oz are to the West. This first installment in a trilogy of live action 3-D movies is actually a prequel to The Journey To The West, the much told story of the Monkey King's adventures on the road to India |
The boyfriend asked if they were on drugs when they made this film. So just saying it might not be for everyone. But if you love the Monkey King and if you made it through the first one (some hated that one too, but you learn of all his magic and talents in that one) It's a gem of a story by a Chinese favorite legend. According to a friend even Marvel would like to get a hold of this storyline.
In Monkey King 3 the monk and his protectors (a pig boy and a blue guard along with Monkey King) get lost in the river and end up in Womanland. Here the monk meets the Queen and they instantly fall in love.

At the time these two were a real-life couple. Zanilla Zhao and Feng Shaofeng. They have a son together but have since separated a few years ago. Certainly, they have a great sincerity for each other. |
Oh a lot of things happen to this group. Of course the women in womenland hate men for starters and of course they guys are imprisoned and soon to meet their maker. But of course, the queen saves them and there are lots of lose ends about why their are so many children in womanland. Of course, the guys fall in the underground motherlake and become pregnant. Except for the wise Monkey King. And that could have been a new beginning for everyone. But the Monkey King knew the monk was a man on a mission so Monkey King goes to Miscarriage Cave.
The film has so many beautiful visuals of land and sea and CGI and everything else. Honestly, I ate a bag of popcorn while watching this film. Naturally, who I was watching this with didn't get anything out of this story. But the one quote that got to me..was when the Queen finally awoke from the pools of depth they went through. "I had a dream about you," she said to the Monk. "Your hair was long and we were together, but you weren't happy."
Perhaps there will be a reboot of the whole Monkey King reboot. Don't know how China would feel about that.

ReplyDeleteWorld changes! And women will change the world!
ReplyDeleteUy el es lindo. Yo intente ver el primero pero no me convenció. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteWhoa! This sounds like an interesting movie for sure. I love this line: "The boyfriend asked if they were on drugs when they made this film." And with pregnant dudes and a miscarriage cave, how could Marvel not want a piece of it? On a more serious note, though, the pictures are just gorgeous. They really translate the Wizard of Oz/Odyssey vibe you mentioned. We have a lot to learn in the West! :)
