“Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive, and will come forth later, in uglier ways. —SIGMUND FREUD”
YOU WILL EITHER LOVE THIS NOVEL or absolutely HATE it!
I have heard from scads of patrons how much they loved this novel and are always wanting to find another Silent Patient kind of book. Then.... there are those, "What was the point of this, really?" But sometimes, it can take years for peeps to get excited about a book!
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.
Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.
Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him....
These kind of novels can lead to debates. So yeah, have your book club take this challenge and see where it goes..just kidding. On second thought, maybe see if you can find it at your local library and just read it and find out what you think. Or it could be that book you thrift at the local HALF PRICE place... then share it with a friend later. Yeah, it's one of those kind of books. A book you might be so freaking happy about you can't wait to call your friend in PA just to say, "Guess what I read? Have you read it?"
Sometimes, some of us just need a book to get excited about. Only, it might not excite everyone. Don't forget to check if you can download an APP from your local library. Here it's LIBBY. A great way to check out books on your device with your library card. And you can read or listen to books (magazines too..and believe me they aren't cheap anymore.) you aren't sure you really want to buy.
Thanks for sharing

ReplyDeleteOh, it's the best to be excited about a book! I so know what you mean about wanting to share it with everyone. The mystery of why Alicia shot her husband seems fascinating, especially with Freud tossed in. And this part made me laugh: "So yeah, have your book club take this challenge and see where it goes . . . just kidding." Finally, it's interesting how everything in the collage looks so elegant -- kind of like the life Alicia seemed to lead. Awesome post all the way around!
