Don't go thinking this is the original Avengers. However, it is a man's movie with a real men. It's about 2 and a half hours long. And to few, it's the best movie offered this year while some..might not think so. |
For starters, we've got a Skarsgard staring. And many of the actors are Swedish as this tale takes place in Icling with perhaps a Nordic twist. However, there are a few actors rather unrecognizable...like Ethan Hawk and Bjork! Oh, and there is Kidman too who sometimes looks a little crazy. But of course, it is a twisted tale.
Halfway through, you might recognize..oh it's Shakespeare! But look for the authentic perils of how man became to be. If you are looking for the heathen part of our ancestors well, you got it. Yes, it was never said the Vikings were nice. No, these sort of earthy men drank blood and wine and chanted around the fire deep in a cave to be one with the wolf. Thus comes impaired dreams that become nightmares.
There was a scene that suddenly hit me of what was happening right now in a steel mill we hear of in a faraway land of great farm country. It just went to show how aggressive we still are and evidently always will be. Of course, there are choices we make, and the fears we have of everyone out there. Do we pillage what others have grown? Evidently, we do and this takes us back to our brutal history.
However, I have always wanted to know a least an inkling of the art of war. And in the nature of a Rigly Scott way this director Robert Eggers takes us on this revengeful quest. Also, one might wonder where we get our faith from to meet our fate.

Oh, the visions of beauty! It might have been Anna-Taylor Joy that saved the movie or just stole it. Beware, the men might be figuring out spears, arrows, and swords, but the women are cunning. Yet, maybe just kitchen witches. Definitely, Joy delivers! |

The film has a lot to offer. Yet, the fact remains war isn't something we should make a romance of. Should we do everything our fathers ask us to? And do the old stories still haunt us? Were the Runic masters really one with the Wolves and can you only play with some swords at night? If you like your men earthy, I suggest you go see it. |
Oh I like Anna Taylor Joy must try to watch this one
ReplyDeleteIt's got an interesting cast, for sure. I'm watching Ethan Hawke in Moon Knight right now (not loving it) but I liked him in the Before Sunrise movies. I do think movies can glamorize war too much, but then again I'm guilty of liking a good Viking tale!
ReplyDeleteYes, his Before Sunrise movies are my favorites of his too.
DeleteI love Anna-Taylor, she's so amazing. I haven't been able to see the movie yet.

What a fun -- yet also deep -- review! It's creepy but definitely interesting to think about how we started out as violent brutes -- and may be still. Also, before I started reading, I was squinting at the poster and thinking, is that Ethan Hawke?! It's funny how's he's turned up again. I always liked him (although somewhat shamefully given the way he treated Uma). Anyway, I'm glad that The Northman gave you lots to think about. And that you got to see it at a discount!
