Oh, it might be February but he'd been in her thoughts since last September. Now if she could only bump into him again, but this time in comfortable shoes.
She'd laid in bed plenty of nights thinking what she might say, but of course, it became a nightmare if she thought about it long enough. Jess had a feeling it would not work out. He probably had a girlfriend. Maybe he was even engaged.
Jess shook her head. No, she wasn't the type to interfere in anyone's life. Of course, in her dreams, he had a good-paying job and could do no wrong. Her pessimistic self gave her a good dose of reality when she saw him in the grocery store, begging groceries. Of course, if she'd seen this as a teen she wouldn't have thought a second about it. But now that she was older and trying her best to be more than a file clerk at the office, it was a little sad.
Could this possibly be true? After all, he could make cheap chinos and a white tee look like he might be worth a million. While she was the type who could dress for a career and look like she came out of her grandmother's closet.
Naturally, everyone at work was trying to dress her to be more professional, but no one had given her a successful thumbs up yet.
"Oh, if we did hit it off," she thought to herself. "He'd probably tell me I'm the best little sister he never had."
Yes, the weeks were stop and go. Should she or shouldn't she? Jess really wanted to at least say hello, but that would take a nerve that she didn't seem to have. So, like a sideway dance, there in the store, she took a turn when she saw him stocking cans of green beans, but he grabbed her arm before she fell into the display of tomato soup.
"Is your blood sugar low?" He asked with such sincerity.
"What?" Jess felt mute. Her big eyes could only look at him and he was holding her wrist. For a second she wondered if she was in a live Asian drama. But she got herself together and shook her head no.
"I think you need something to eat," he told her. He went to get a cookie from the deli and something to drink. She really wanted to leave before he got back, but she was certain her feet were stuck in cement.
When he came back she noticed his name tag said, Jesse. She smiled.
"What's so funny?" He asked.
"Your name is Jesse and I'm Jess," she said. It was as if it was meant to be.
Nice
ReplyDeleteI wonder if this is the start of something good or if she's idealizing him a bit. Which we've all done at one time or naother, I suppose. I want to know more about. about these two!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind comment on my last Post. It was scary! Is your snow gone? We got some too but it's sorta better. We didn't make brownies but they sound good!!!!
This one started out as a one sentence kind of thing..and then I remembered when I was a teen how I practically swooned over the bagger at the grocery store. Of course, my mother wasn't thrilled about this, she actually looked at me and said, "Snap out of it!"
DeleteHa ha! Been there... those early crushes :)

Oh, I love this! We all build up our crushes. So when Jess sees hers in a less-than-flattering light at the grocery store, it's not surprising -- but still sad. Yet then he launches into hero mood, giving her that cookie before she passes out. And when she finds out that his name is Jesse we know that even if he's not exactly who she dreamed, he's someone who will become very important to her. Swoon! 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪💖
