in Madrid

Just an AI adventure 🩷

I had always wanted to visit Madrid, the capital of Spain and one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. I had booked a flight for a week-long vacation, hoping to explore the culture, history, and art of this amazing place.

On my first day, I decided to go to the Retiro Park1, a large and green oasis in the heart of the city. I walked along the paths, admiring the fountains, statues, and flowers. I reached the Crystal Palace, a stunning glass building that reflected the sunlight. I entered the palace, which was hosting an exhibition of modern art. I was browsing the paintings, when I noticed a guy standing next to me. He had dark hair, brown eyes, and a friendly smile. He might have been a local.

“Hi, do you like this one?” he asked me, pointing to a colorful abstract painting.

I turned to him and smiled. “Hi, yes, it’s very interesting. I’m not sure what it means, though.”

He laughed. “Me neither. I think it’s open to interpretation. By the way, I’m Carlos. I live here in Madrid.”

“I’m Anna. I’m from Nebraska. I’m here on vacation.”

“Nice to meet you, Anna. How do you like Madrid so far?”

“I love it. It’s such a beautiful and lively city. There’s so much to see and do.”

“I’m glad you’re enjoying it. Do you have any plans for today?”

“Not really. I was just going to wander around and see what I find.”

“Well, if you don’t mind, I can show you some of my favorite places. I know the city pretty well, and I can tell you some stories and facts that you won’t find in the guidebooks.”

I hesitated for a moment. He seemed nice and genuine, but I didn’t know him at all. What if he was a creep or a scammer? But then I thought, why not? I was here to have fun and experience new things. And he was cute and charming. Maybe this was the start of a romantic adventure.

“Sure, that sounds great. Thank you for offering.”

He smiled and took my hand. “You’re welcome. Come on, let’s go.”

We left the palace and walked through the park. He showed me the Monument to Alfonso XII, a majestic bronze statue overlooking a large pond. He told me that the statue was built in honor of the king who restored the monarchy in Spain after a brief period of republicanism. He also told me that the pond was a popular spot for boating and relaxing.

We rented a rowboat and paddled around the pond, enjoying the view and the breeze. He asked me about my life in Nebraska, and I told him about my family, my job, and my hobbies. He told me about his life in Madrid, and I learned that he was a journalist for a local newspaper. He loved his work, but he also had a passion for travel and photography. He had visited many countries and had a collection of amazing photos.

We got along well, and I felt a connection with him. He was smart, funny, and adventurous. He made me laugh and feel comfortable. He also complimented me on my appearance, my accent, and my curiosity. He said I was beautiful, sweet, and fascinating.

After we returned the boat, we walked to the Puerta de Alcalá, a neoclassical arch that marked one of the entrances to the city. He told me that the arch was built by King Charles III in the 18th century, and that it had witnessed many historical events, such as the French invasion, the Spanish Civil War, and the transition to democracy. He also told me that the arch was a symbol of Madrid’s openness and diversity, as it welcomed people from all over the world.

We took a selfie in front of the arch, and he asked me for my phone number. I gave it to him, and he sent me the photo. He said he wanted to keep in touch with me, and maybe see me again before I left. I agreed, and I felt a flutter in my stomach.

We continued our tour, and he showed me more of Madrid’s attractions, such as the Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace, the Gran Vía, and the Prado Museum2. He also took me to some of his favorite spots, such as a cozy café, a hidden bookstore, and a rooftop bar. He introduced me to some of his friends, who were very friendly and welcoming. He bought me some typical snacks, such as churros, tapas, and sangria. He taught me some Spanish words and phrases, and I taught him some English ones. He kissed me on the cheek, and I kissed him back.

We spent the whole day together, and I had the time of my life. I felt like I was in a movie, or a dream. He was the perfect guide, and the perfect companion. He made me fall in love with Madrid, and with him.

  2. I think the best way to experience a city like that is to have a local guide, someone personalized. What a romantic adventure! I love the hidden bookstore, and the bar. See, that;s the thing that someone passionate about their favorite places can show someone who's never been there, and make it a real experience.

Have you ever seen Before Sunrise movies?

  4. Midwest meets Madrid -- love that! Everything is so magical and cinematic. Part of me wants the heroine to reconnect with Carlos, but part of me doesn't because that might spoil the memory of their perfect day. 💖🌎💖🌎
