May Microfiction

Words: I would lift, noise, seconds [two separate microfiction]

The night brought the noise of someone walking through the house in the dead of night. It felt like a distant ghost I should know, but it was just a summer rental by the lake. It only took seconds for the creaks of the wooden floor to shift to a calm slumber. Was it just the house, or maybe a stranger passing by, who awoke my thoughts of something sinister? I would lift myself to my feet and follow like a zombie to investigate the sliding patio door in the moonlight, which led to the trail to the lake. Perhaps the lake was inviting me to a midnight swim.

I would lift him up when I could. Oh, sometimes, he would be in such a bad way that I felt I was his cheerleader. He was full of noise and sometimes a brute when he'd had too much to drink, but the truth would come out, and I would wonder why I was with him after all. But I knew he needed me; who else would put up with that personality of his? I knew I deserved better, but we had been together for an awful long time, and somehow I always came through for him in the worst of times. In seconds, I could make him the happiest guy on earth because he liked my grilled cheese sandwiches, and he always came back for more.
