Actually, late May or even now might be the best time to camp while the temps are still cool and it won't be so muggy, because living in the Heartland means a lot of humidity during the summer.
Now I confess I am not the best camper. No, I'm pretty much an indoor person while I have a husband who grew up camping. And the times we did got camping were of course, an adventure.
Before kids we would spend our time hiking all over Enchanted Rock in Texas, and then last minute pop a two man tent and eat what was left our picnic of the day, which would consist of tuna sandwichs, chips and pop. Even the night we were there we thought a bear was out to get us. It was only a fat raccoon trying to see what was in the tent.
Later, when I was a few months pregnant with my son, we went to Big Ben on Spring Break with my husband's sister, who is a professional hiker and didn't mind setting up her space anywhere in the outback of Texas. I was not fond of Big Bend at all. We were out in No Man's Land and to beware of all the critters. I also had to get up every few hours to go to the bathroom, which had no bathroom.
Of course, the fun didn't stop there. We moved on to the Davis Mountains which is a Texas State Park. At least there was a place to shower and a large restroom facility. It was there I learned what other campers did to have successful camping trips.
Lots of easy access to food was a plus. Being ready for the slightest hazard with all sorts of little kits from medication to hygiene. I felt out of the loop.
Still, I remember the days at the lake where a friend's grandparents would make camp in their little trailer and invite us out for a Friday night of burgers, or a fish fry. Oh, I might enjoy those days again. Even so, you might have to stay out of the water. Not everything is nice, even there.
Yet, deep down we all want to go to a place Only We Know to make new memories and remenber the good times.
Good times!
