Dakota had no intentions of ever seeing Nav again, but he was always around the Complex. She couldn't help but bump into him. As always, he was friendly, asking questions about her place. Asking about all sorts of issues, but the toilet. Maybe he didn't want to talk about that either.
On occasion, they'd meet up at the food truck in the evening just outside the entrance of the camp. Their falafel sandwiches were so tasty, and their salads were fresh too. It was never a date, but they usually had plenty to talk about. Actually, she was amazed that she saw him at all. He was always on the run.
"Oh, I saw you running this morning," he smiled and said he wished he could do that.
"Well, let me know when you can," Dakota wouldn't mind having someone to run with. "But I am looking for a job." She felt certain she needed more than just exercise. She would have to start selling off her wardrobe in storage since that was an added expense.
"I hear they're looking for some help at the assisted living," he told her at the picnic benches where they ate their food truck meals.
"What would I have to do?" Dakota had never thought about that.
"Oh, I don't think you'd have to be a nurse, but you might want to take some online classes, just in case. I don't think it would cost you anything," Nav said he knew of a couple of people who worked there, but it was hard keeping receptionists. "It's kind of a boring job. You know, answering the door, a little bit of babysitting, but with old people. Just in the lobby."
"Huh," she almost laughed, enjoying the savory meal. She thought of applying. He sent her a link. Oddly, they now had each other's personal phone numbers. She hadn't meant that to happen. She studied the link. Suddenly, it hit her as if she knew what she had forgotten about.
"My car, I think it needs some help." Dakota was sure Nav could look at it.
"Me? I don't even own a car," he laughed. "I saw a business card on the bulletin board. I think the name is Alex. Maybe they could help."
"Sure," Dakota felt as if she'd been shot down, somehow. It was a strange feeling. Usually, she had a certain charm with everyone. Maybe she thought that way with Nav, too. "I'll do that."
