Fiona crawled under the stall to get into the OUT OF ORDER handicap restroom. She hid in the corner and kept her eyes on her phone. She was practically shaking. Matty wasn't being the Matty she wanted. What had she done to deserve this?
His eyes were growing restless on the drive. If only she hadn't gotten into the car with him? She was so angry with herself. How could she be so oblivious to the fact that maybe there was something OFF about her kind of boyfriend?
They weren't really going out. Nothing was set in stone, she reminded herself. But the fact remained: how was she going to get out of this one?
For the first ten minutes, she watched cat videos on YouTube, but then she was afraid she might run down her battery, then what?
She sighed, trying to take comfort that Dakota had taken her message to heart. Yes, Dakota was a true friend. She knew she'd pushed Ezra away. It was the fact that he thought more of her than he should have. She hadn't meant to be cruel, but she felt as if she'd used him from time to time. Yes, she was a free loader, and maybe she'd been that way with Matty, too.
At the moment, she didn't like herself very much, but then again, she did easily hate herself from time to time. It was as if she wanted bad things to happen to her. Maybe she didn't deserve anything good. It wasn't easy to be a good person. Nice wasn't exactly her middle name.
She tried to breathe to relax, but she had a coughing fit instead. It wasn't the cleanest place in the world. She wrinkled her nose. When would Dakota get here?
"Fiona, are you in here?" It was Matty's voice. Fiona remained silent. She heard his heavy footsteps. He pushed in the stall doors, but not the one at the back that was blocked off and locked. She heard his sigh. Finally, he left.
Fiona nursed her bottom lip and squinted. She felt as if she might be here forever. Her stomach grumbled. She looked up at the ceiling. There wasn't even a window in sight. She sighed as she sat hugging her knees. She thought of texting Dakota again, but knew she'd wait. It would have to be an emergency. She put her head down and did her best to stay calm. After a while, her eyes closed. Her body was so tired.
"Fiona," a whisper awoke her. "I'm here."
Fiona's eyes were wide open. She took a peek from under the stall. It was Dakota. She crawled out from under the stall and brushed down her messy clothes.
"Is he still out there?" Fiona hoped Matty had left, but Dakota nodded.
"Nav is talking to him."
"Nav?" Fiona squinted as if she wasn't expecting that.
"Are you OK?" Dakota grabbed her shoulders. She hugged her. "You had me so worried. Don't ever do this again."
Fiona pulled away and looked at Dakota. Her stomach grumbled before she could say anything else. Dakota looped her arm around hers. She was buying her dinner.
"But, but what about Matty?"
"Nav will take care of that. Don't you worry." Dakota assured her.
Good
ReplyDeleteI still think that Fiona should tell Matty that it's over between them...letting Nav. handle it doesn't sound right to me.
