Unleashed

An unyielding courage, to live and let die. Kit FOK (starring Zhen Feng SUN) is the hottest underground boxer, with his unbeatable records. His great success thanks to the outstanding tutor - Debo (starring Ken LOW). After few years, the business of the boxing studio went bad. Kit FOK must win this battle against Sholin (starring Zi Ping ZHENG) who is well-known as "Killing Machine", to keep this studio. After a bloody fight, Kit FOK is defeated and hurt badly. It was a set-up by Lok (starring Sam LEE) who was Debo's follower ten years ago, and his reputation was much higher than Kit FOK's ever made. He was arranged to fight with a Cambodian boxer after encouraged by Debo. He totally lost. Since then, he became drugs addicted with huge debts, and sentenced to jail for years. Throughout the years, he blamed everything on Debo's fault. After released from jail, Lok pretends to buy the studio and wanted to kick Debo out. Lok thinks he could revenge Debo by losing the hottest boxer Kit FOK. After Kit FOK's fatal failure, Debo realized himself as a failure master and hope to show him the real spirit of a boxer - Does Kit FOK stand for himself and confident to join the final fight? Will this be his final fight ever?

Venus Wong as Effy. Who won't bow down her principles as an actress. No way will she sleep with the director. So he makes the movie project hard for her and acts out in front of everyone how angry he is with her. But after social media hits and he's in the wrong and she gets a lead in a new project, he's back wanting forgiveness. Somehow, it ends badly for Effy. Her face gets cut. Of course, the movie tries for a good outcome for her, but I really felt they missed the mark. This director needed to pay. Naturally, the film didn't have time for that. After all, it was fight club night at the bar.

OK, this one has plenty of holes but newcomer Zhen Feng Sun holds his own in this film with the Fight Club scene in Hong Kong. Of course, we don't really get a love story even if a wannabe actress Effy shows up and wants to learn to fight. I can't say it really paid off in this fast-paced film. Honestly, it's hardly over an hour long. There were plenty of ways they could have built this into a longer film. I would have liked to have known the 'bad guy' more. And of course, Effy and how she should have sued the director for cutting her face. Actually, I was kind of hoping she would have ended up fighting the blonde guy in the end, but that's just the girl power in me...=)

Still, I enjoyed the location of the film. Especially, where Kit trains in this massive community..a rooftop gym! I think I would have gone with a better name than Fok Kit, but then again they aren't Americans..or maybe they were just laughing at us because of this name. .. like an inside joke.

Yet, Zhen Feng Sun shows a lot of promise. He's never been in a Chinese Drama. But he has the character driving skills and of course, he looks good on film. Here's hoping he finds better projects. Something about him reminds me of Korean Pop-Star Rain.

If you enjoy solid fight scenes then catch it on VIKI!

  3. I like how you find stuff to like even in a movie that could've been better. I feel that way too, that all (okay, most) movies and books have something to offer. And I agree that Effy should have sued the director for cutting her face! Eesh! Keep the violence fake, am I right? Also, Fok Kit . . . yeah.
