Rachel & Huck

 

What were they getting themselves into? Rachel knew it would be up to no good if Jamie had anything to do with it.

"He's left us high and dry?" It was the truth. She'd hoped to meet him, but that felt it was out of the question. "And now he's offering us a car?" She shook her head, knowing it was too good to be true.

"But, if it was for real," Huck smirked with a shrug as he stared at the photo of the car. It wasn't brand new, but new enough. The Ford had new tires. Jamie texted that it had had a tune-up and was ready for a cross-country trip.

Rachel let a smile slip too. What if it was all true?

"Well, let's check it out," of course, they might have to go on foot,  but Jamie said it was close. 

"What if I park it in your driveway?" Jamie texted.

 Rachel thought she might lose consciousness. Was she happy that they could drive across the country, or to find out who this mysterious Jamie was?

Huck shook his head with a grin. For a second she could picture him teaching their own kid to do that silly NO head-shake. Of course, she thought she might choke. Where was her mind? She needed to focus. She felt she was going in circles in the kitchen. It was the middle of the day. Weren't they supposed to be headed for work? Actually, she did feel a little dizzy as she leaned against the kitchen counter.

"Are you all right?" Huck went to grab her by her shoulders.

Rachel sighed. "Maybe too much is happening." She nodded as she looked around this place. After all, it had been home all summer. Was she really ready to go home?

Just then they heard a beep from the driveway. Rachel gasped a laugh. They both hurried to the front door to see what awaited just down the front steps. They were going to meet Jamie with an SUV they could drive out of here.

They were shocked when they found out who got out of the car. Of course, it wasn't Jamie. Was it?

"You're Jamie?" Huck walked toward the car.

"I never said my name was Sheila," she flashed a smile as she got out. She brought him papers. The title was in his name. It was all legit.

"Why are you doing this?" Rachel looked at her surprised.

"Oh, I know you've been wanting to leave for a long time now," she said to Huck. "Of course, there was someone I wanted you to meet." She held in a laugh. "I'm glad you two hit it off." She said she'd always been on Huck's side.

"I promised your mom I'd take care of you," Jamie nodded. "If it doesn't work out, you can always come back."

Huck smiled and gave her a hug. Rachel hugged her too. 

"I want you two to be safe," Jamie insisted they call her every day.

"What are you going to tell Cobie?" Huck wanted to know.

"Oh, he knows who really runs that surf shop," she told him. "It's me." Her smile was open. About then a car came to pick her up. Evidently, it was her new boyfriend.
