It had been a hell of a day. Nothing was going right. Still, Ste needed to cool down before heading back to his place. He needed to wash all the bickering and politics away from at work. But how could he when it was always on his mind?
Although, he wasn't expecting the music. When did this happen? Had he landed at Mikey's pub? It was a bit unusual. No annoying Irish jigs, but this was 80's tunes. He winced hard. What the hell?
Naturally, he got his usual. Bourbon and coke. Of course, it tasted just a bit dirty. It always did. If he could have his own bottle of Jack at home might be key, but he never thought of it unless he was here at the bar in the dark sipping on iced whisky and soda.
Ste sighed as he looked down at the end of the bar. There she was. And he couldn't keep his eyes off her. What was that? Wearing a bra in public. It was October. Sweater weather. For a second he thought he saw an eye indeed on her forehead. Of course, she remained elegant and queen-like as if she had everyone's secret here.
Well, he wasn't going to take a look. He turned his back to her. Women, best to let them be was his mantra. Before he knew it she was next to him. He felt her hand cold as ice as if it might be death itself, patting his back. He shivered.
When he turned they were face to face.
"Care to dance?" Her voice was a bit breathy and her eyes might be full of venom.
"What?" Ste managed. She asked again. This time he shook his head, no. She smiled with a laugh and took his hand anyway.
Ste sighed. It was as if he had no control. She didn't even have to say hello. There they were on the old floor with the music pulsing through his veins. For a good five minutes or so, he was dancing straight-up new-wave punk just like that dance number in Reckless.
Surprisingly, he remembered that old movie. It was his mom's favorite and it was a flashback of those days when he would dance with her in the livingroom. It was a rush. He hadn't felt this alive in ages and the floor whirled and so did they.
He woke up in her lap.
"Are..are we still at the pub?" He struggled to get up, but she only smiled as if it wasn't a real worry.
"You know, you wanted your fortune read," Her smile was smart and she smelled of lavender, sage, and Patchuli.
Ste took a deep breath.
"I can see it's been hard for you," she nodded.
"Who are you?" He was certain she was his worst nightmare. Ste struggled to lift his head, but he was in her hands.
"Oh, I'm not one for boyfriends," She shrugged with a smile. Her name was Fiona and she was a fortune teller.
Her hand neared his chest. Although fully clothed, he sensed she could do things to his heart if he fought her on this.
Finally, she let him drop to the floor and it was a wakeup call. After all, they were in his bedroom.
"You need me twenty-four-seven, you see." She walked about studying the rings on each of her fingers.
"What?" He winced as he picked himself up and stared at her bejeweled outfit.
"We have a lot to do," she told him with a laugh.
He nodded and followed her to the kitchen where she made tea. It was sweet with cinnamon and a touch of lemon. Finally, he was awake. It didn't feel like it was his little apartment anymore.
"Didn't you know, we were destined before we were even born," Fiona looked at him with an open smile.
"Huh?" Ste squinted wanting to get out of this, but it wasn't likely. He was to sit with his tea and listen.
"Oh, didn't you know your father's a gypsy? He made a pact with my father." She looked around his place as if she'd seen worse. Fiona shrugged with a laugh. Ste was certain now. This was a very bad day.
Nicely written
ReplyDeleteSte sounds so familiar, like you've written about him before but it's been a while? But then again this sounds like Who is Fiona??? Is she a vampire or a supernatural thing? I love this is perfect for a little spooky read.
ReplyDeleteAnd Danny Trjo. I smiled when I saw it.
Reckless... did I ever see Reckless? Aidan Quinn... I remember him from Desperately Susan.
Thank you for your comments!
ReplyDeleteNothing like going to the pub to escape work drama only to be besieged by a fortune teller! But then again, what other meet-cute can we expect around Halloween? Anyway, I enjoyed this, mysterious vibes and all. And the purple shoes are so cool, just what Fiona would wear! 💜🔮
I'm so glad you're feeling better! I hope that your co-worker's doing okay, especially since you're roadtripping to Texas together. I can see why you'd be dreading that; I hate switching up my schedule too. But hopefully it'll go well and you'll even see and hear some stuff to write about! 📓📒💖
