Catching up with Fan

ON THE COUCH WITH FAN

So are you still at the sorority?

Fan: (squirm a little until she is comfortable) I moved this past summer. (She hugs herself as if she is OK, but is she?) Things fell through with Ollie (she is dead serious when she says this) He wanted us to live in the woods. (she presses lips tight and is a little sad) I tried. (her voice cracked) I think he wanted to be away from the city. I guess. I mean, I thought he was doing well, but I am not sure anymore. (she looks as if she could cry.) It..it helped that Sean moved to NYC. (however she is straight lipped about this) We..we have a place together now. And yes, I stayed at the UNI.

Are you in library science?

Fan: Well, no. I did try. I mean I took all these courses that Professor Dewey had. (she shake her head) It was probably a waste of time. I mean, I even got Ollie's job at the library, shelving. After we broke up, I worked really hard.

Why did you do that?

Fan: He wasn't coming home. I left him in the woods. (she nurses her bottom lip) A part of me, thought he might appear. I even went to  his show. Several times.

Have you seen him?

Fan: (she shakes her head NO. She then pulls her fingers through her hair and puts her short bobbed hair behind her ear). I kept thinking he'd come back, but he didn't. Sean did. (Her eyes look mournful about it).

Do you still miss him?

Fan: Not all the time. (She reaches for a cup, but the interviewer isn't sure if it's water or something else.) I mean, I have Sean. He's family, you know. He's always been there for me.

Are you in a relationship?

Fan: It's not big deal (she lets a smile slip) Yeah, I was really in love with Ollie. I was. But, but Sean is good for me. (she takes a sip of her drink, draws her bare feet under her to get comfy on the couch) I have a new job. It's at the hospital. Sean works there. It's only, you know, part-time. I work just in customer service. I'm learning a lot. I'll probably stick with it.

Do you miss anyone from the Sorority?

Fan: I miss Onni, (she smiles) Oh she's has such a sweet home and I love it when we can get together, even if it's thrifting. And Kate..oh, her career has really taken off in film. I miss those days. (she nods) I haven't heard from her in ages. The sorority was such a safe place. I love that we could be together that way. It was sweet. Some of the best times of my life happened at Orchard Street. (Her smile is genuine. She reaches for the cup again).

Check your local library for details. We go to ours every January to this swap. We learn a lot about what the bees and butterflies like in our gardens too.

  1. So she is with Sean because he is good for her, not because she loves him? Poor Sean...

    1. Yes, poor Sean, indeed. I just couldn't give her a happy ending. At least not yet.

  2. Aww I was sorry to hear her and Ollie broke up after reading the earlier post about them living in NYC. Poor Fan. You really captured her angst and mixed feelings here, her body languages. And she clearly misses her sorority.

I'd loveee to read more of these.
