Talk to me
When
"People, put your phones away," Miss Cross bellows as she looks across the room to the open window where the crash happened in front of the school. It disrupted her high school students' English lesson on the board as she was discussing prepositions. When the sound of a bomb bursts and a tower of smoke flumes the air which slithers into her classroom on the second floor, the students in their pale uniforms begin to cough and so does Miss Cross who is no longer her stoic self, but fighting tears amid chaos. The students race out the door leaving her behind. "Listen...talk to me," she coughs as if she is the voice of reason, stammering toward the hallway, thinking she will decide when class is dismissed, and of course, it isn't.
