Fiction Tuesday- The Future of Us

Carolyn and Jay with a fan

This YA novel has a lot going for it. It has Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler writing it. All together, it is a highly anticipated book for many. Just don't go in thinking its Th1rteen R3asons Why because its not.

I’ve always protected myself when it came to love. And maybe that’s the problem. By not letting myself get hurt now, it ripples into much bigger pain later.

MY DREAMCAST for Emma & Josh - Vanessa Marano and Beau Mirchoff

This is the story of Josh and Emma who are friends back in 1996. Just when AOL was COOL and home computers were the next big thing to have. Also FACEBOOK was starting. It is a teen story with a bit of a time-travel twist to it. What if you found your FACEBOOK page 15 years from now? What if you didn't like what you see?

You are a go-with-the-flow guy. You’ve always been that way. And that can feel great because it means you don’t have to make any hard decisions. But sometimes, you need to figure out what you want. If that means you need to swim against the tide to get it, at least you’re aiming for something that could make you very happy.
David Templeton, in The Future of Us

There are plenty of 90's references in this book. Also a pretty terrific supporting cast, too. Which sometimes, doesn't happen in YA novels when the main focus in on the two main characters.

"I just finished reading The Future of Us, the best worst book I’ve read in a long time. It was a terrible book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. The best parts of it were the references to things going on in the mid nineties that were obviously only put in to remind the reader that the year is 1996."-Emily Hoffman

There are mix-feelings about the book. However, this book will be made in a movie.

“Emma kissed me. The moment our lips touched, I was back to where I was six months ago. It was the kiss I wanted last November. It felt like everything that happened this week had finally brought us together again. We could start over.

Then I realized the truth. She wasn’t kissing me because of who I am. She had that chance last fall. Emma just needed something that would create a huge ripple, and she didn’t care if it would hurt my future. But more than that, she didn’t care if it would hurt me.
