The Handsome Stewardess

 

Handsome Stewardess is a GL drama from Tawain. I had such high hopes for this drama which was made right before the pandemic. Unfortunately, it missed the mark.

Certainly, it's a character-driven story with Holly (Suan Wang) the bartender who had a mad rush with the karate expert who comes into the bar and saves the day. Although, we miss most of the romance between the two. You aren't sure of the attraction, but that's not what makes this a bad drama. Still, it would have been nice to have slowed it down, a bit because it flew by and we didn't know they even spent the night together. 

So Holly hopes to see more of her girlfriend by becoming a stewardess with the help of a friend who is a gay male stewardess. Throw in some words that the LGBTQ community wouldn't want to hear as the story progress...it feels to lose touch with what it should be going for. Although Holly, is a strong character, her weaknesses just don't feel right, somehow. Sure, she looks much better in pants because she feels better in pants. Yet, in my mind, Holly is the laid-back sort. Why should she care? It was a bit warped. And somehow the significant other just felt miscast.

Some of the best BL dramas I  have seen are from Tawain. Although, Thailand has a much more growing BL entertainment industry with Tawain getting backlash from Chiana's censorship and Japan seems to present many of their J-pop stars in BL dramas too. Unfortunately, GL is rare in the Asian drama world, but I am sure it will spark many opportunities in the future. Hopefully.
