Rachel & Huck

"Are you serious?" Huck squinted with sleep in his eyes. He scowled as if this was the worst-case scenario ever when Rachel told him Cobie was here.

"How did he find us?" He asked as he set up to look for his track pants.

"I dunno," Rachel went to put on her slippers and her robe. "I'll make coffee."

Huck yawned as if he could fall back into bed and sleep, but he rubbed his eyes and said in a groggy tone, "Good idea." He stretched a bit more as he got in his hoodie to find out what this was all about.

He managed to go down the stairs and turned on the front light. After looking through the peephole, he could see Rachel was right.

"It's about time," Cobie shivered in his shorts, hoodie, and flip-flops. He edged his way in before Huck could say anything. "What took so long?"

"Why are you here?" Huck scowled. This was the last thing he needed. He had to be up by six. It was two in the morning.

"Well, I can't do anything without you," Cobie hugged himself hard.

"So, why are you here?" Huck tilted his head, seeing Cobie wasting no time finding the couch. He reached for the throw and pulled it over him like he might already be in bed.

"I just told you," Cobie squinted hard. Huck sighed back. The coffee couldn't come quick enough. He was certain this would be a long story.

"You know my ex," Cobie told him. "She has to run everything, you know. She said she could get more done if I wasn't in the picture." Cobie nodded as if this was all her fault.

"What did you do?" Huck gave him a stern look with hands on his slim hips.

"Nothing." Cobie shrugged.

"Well, that's a given."

Huck shook his head. Oh, how he wished for sleep, but here was Rachel bringing hot mugs of coffee. She even remembered how Cobie liked his coffee, with cream and sugar. Naturally, Cobie didn't say thank you. It wasn't in his vocabulary.

"So you just decided to come out to Iowa?" Huck finally made himself comfortable on the loveseat across from the coffee table where Cobie was on the couch. Rachel snuggled next to Huck as they drank the freshly brewed coffee.

"Aren't  you married or something?" Cobie said.

"We would have told you," Rachel said.

"No you wouldn't," Cobie set up with his coffee. "You two don't even send me a postcard."

"When have you ever-" Huck sighed. It was useless to mention Cobie's travels.

"Everything is so damn expensive," Cobie shook his head in disgust.

"Bro, everything is expensive, everywhere."

Huck was dead serious.

"What are you doing these days anyway?" Cobie cradled his cup as if he was enjoying it like a meal.

Huck told him about working at the hotel in maintenance.

"Maintenance?" Cobie made it sound like a foreign language.

"It's not so bad."

"There's an indoor pool and a spa," Rachel mentioned that sometimes they went there ever so often.

"A spa?" Cobie brightened up. "Well, I should work there."

"I dunno, they don't really need any cabana boys, you know." Huck winced with laughter. Of course, Cobie needed another cup of coffee and did they have anything to eat?
