Why not start Pride month out with one of the best authors, Alex Sanchez! To some, it might be dated, but seriously, he gave these teen books a lot of heart and I feel sure has helped a lot of those find their niche in school. Possibly, even starting their own support group.
You might recognize Matt Bomer and Noah Segan on the cover. And it's been banned by libraries too. Which made many want to read the trilogy more.
RAINBOW BOYS
Three teenage boys, coming of age and out of the closet. Jason Carrillo is a jock with a steady girlfriend, but he can't stop dreaming about sex...with other guys. Kyle Meeks doesn't look gay, but he is. And he hopes he never has to tell anyone—especially his parents. Nelson Glassman is "out" to the entire world, but he can't tell the boy he loves that he wants to be more than just friends...
In a revealing debut novel that percolates with passion and wit, Alex Sanchez follows these very different high-school seniors as their struggles with sexuality and intolerance draw them into a triangle of love, betrayal, and ultimately, friendship.

The New York Times bestselling illustrator of Blue is the Warmest Color, Julie Maroh, and Lambda Award-winning author Alex Sanchez (Rainbow Boys), present a new coming-out romance set against the backdrop of the DC Universe. Jake Hyde doesn't swim-not since his father drowned. Luckily, he lives in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, which is in the middle of the desert, yet he yearns for the ocean and is determined to leave his hometown for a college on the coast. But his best friend, Maria, wants nothing more than to make a home in the desert, and Jake's mother encourages him to always play it safe. Yet there's nothing "safe" about Jake's future-not when he's attracted to Kenny Liu, swim team captain and rebel against conformity. And certainly not when he secretly applies to Miami University. Jake's life begins to outpace his small town's namesake, which doesn't make it any easier to come out to his mom, or Maria, or the world. But Jake is full of secrets, including the strange blue markings on his skin that low when in contact with water. What power will he find when he searches for his identity, and will he turn his back to the current or dive head first into the waves? |
Sanchez is a youth and family counselor and has written many YA novels. He has a master's degree in guidance and counseling. He also writes the graphic novel series for DC comics You brought me the Ocean.
Another favorite I enjoyed Boyfriends with Girlfriends.
Sounds good
ReplyDeleteI donno these. I really need to read more!
ReplyDeleteGracias por la reseña, me lo llevo anotado. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteOoh thanks for the link to this! So timely too with people struggling to be themselves. and of course it was banned *eye rolls*
ReplyDeleteAlex Sanchez sounds amazing! It's so sad that the books that can help kids the most are always the ones that are banned. Not only does this deprive kids of a much needed dose of you're-not-alone, it sends the message that there's something wrong with them. Thanks for shining a light on these books and their importance to those who are struggling.
ReplyDeleteAlso yes . . . I'd notice Matt Bomer anywhere. :)
