The last person Rachel wanted to bring up was Wally. She knew he was around. Still, she didn't even know what she'd seen in him. "God, he's such a goofball," she wanted to say. Instead, she got a wince from Huck.
"Wally? His name is Wally?" Huck looked at her as if that was just weird.
"Well, like your name is perfect," she glared back at him.
"Well, it is kind of iconic," he shrugged. Of course, they returned to their room before she wanted to tell him anything.
"Are you going to quit?" Huck asked in the next breath.
"No." She squinted back. She knew they both needed a paycheck coming in. She would just have to deal, but she didn't like it.
"When did you break up?" Huck wanted to know.
"A long time ago." It felt like it anyway. Of course, she spent much of high school with him even if he was a couple of years older. "He was only boyfriend."
"Aw.." Huck nodded as if he understood.
"I just figured we would always be together," but he hadn't done so well at the University. He got kicked out and now he hadn't done much but veg on his parents' couch. Actually, she was surprised to see him.
"Did he say anything to you?" Huck looked at her as if he needed more to go on.
"No." She sighed.
"Maybe it won't be so bad," Huck shrugged and put his arm around her. "You will tell me if he bothers you."
Rachel was in a fret. She knew she shouldn't have brought Wally up. Maybe they could just stay out of each other's way.
"Well, who ended it?" Huck was curious and he looked down at her.
Rachel wanted to tell him that she did. She suspected he was cheating. She knew he was just a loser, but the fact remained. "He did."
Of course, what hurt the most he acted as if she didn't even exist. She knew they would never be friends. And maybe if she was lucky, he hadn't changed a bit.

That last line makes me wonder if she still has a little reisudal feelings for Wally, even if he is a schlup. Feelings are tricky that way. Hopefully this doofus won't be a problem to her at work...

ReplyDeleteWally is kind of a weird name. But I agree that Rachel should keep her job, especially because it was so hard to come by. Still, the bit about Wally dumping her and not the other way around is a little concerning. I hope she's not still carrying a torch for him . . . 🔥😮🔥😮
