Kat felt like it was a dream, yet her thoughts quaked as she looked up into Uno's face, ever so close. She blinked. A crazy thought shook her. What was happening? She couldn't see herself, but just the fur.
She heard herself hiss. Yes, she knew she reached for his face, but she felt how deeply the claw pierced his face. She had to get away. It was coming. She knew it. She'd feel so raw, and it wasn't something she could let Uno see.
On four feet, her cat body ran to her undies and tee on the other side of his bed. Like a cat ghost, she raced with the things to the bathroom and managed to kick the door in before he could find her. A part of her felt lost and knew how unexpected the transformation would be. She knew she was at fault. And she took a breath, feeling her body change back as if it were on rewind. She thought she might crash.
Meanwhile, there was a knock at the door. Her keen ears listened.
It was Uno's brother she hadn't seen in years. She barely remembered him. She couldn't imagine Min and Uno being close to each other.
Of course, she didn't really have any concept of time as she slipped on her high-waisted panties and snug tee-shirt. If only she had more clothes.
She went to wash her face. Immediately, she knew it was a mistake.
"Who's here?" She heard Min ask Uno.
"Uh, well-"
Kat knew he couldn't explained. She opened the door, staring at her bare toes. No fur. Kat sighed as she noticed the scratch on Uno's face. It wasn't bleeding. It wouldn't scar him, even if she was certain she'd already frightened him.
"It's me," she smiled as if the joke was on Min.
"Kat?" Min scowled as if she were a bad omen.
"Oh, it's not what you think," she assured him.
"She needed a place to stay," Uno nodded as if her brother was overreacting.
Min cracked a devious smile. "And here I thought you weren't human after all."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Uno looked at him wide-eyed as if Min knew about Kat being a cat on occasion, and possibly it was true about Uno, too.
"You two are pretty cute, you know," Min told him while Kat went to look for her jeans. She knew she should leave.
But Uno told her he'd make breakfast for the three of them.
"Oh, but I shouldn't."
She knew she'd taken up too much of his time.
"But you should," Uno looked at her blankly, yet she knew he didn't want her out of his sight at the moment.
"Yeah, we can talk about how you two need to be at Nanna's tonight."
Min went to make coffee. "She hates the thought that Lenny and I are back together again. She hates him so much. But she won't be so angry if she sees that Uno has a date."
Uno looked back at Kat, who shivered at the thought of seeing Uno's grandmother. She'd only heard of her. Nanna was possibly a witch, according to Uno. Kat nursed her bottom lip. What if Nanna could help her with the cat situation? Kat turned and shook her head, no. That would just be wrong. And the old woman might hate her anyway. Nanna did want the best for her grandsons. This much Kat knew from Uno's conversations. about his grandmother. Kat knew she was definitely not good enough for Uno.
"Well," she shrugged. "I got nothing else better to do."
