Kat didn't want to go to another school, but here she was, all brand new. It didn't feel that way. The dread of the mean girls in the hall by their lockers made Kat's face tense. Naturally, they didn't pay her any mind, and she wouldn't pay them any mind either.
Maybe if she lived with her grandmother, she wouldn't have to worry about bullies. Still, she knew deep down she was becoming one. She wasn't sure how it happened. Maybe it was a gene she was born with. She couldn't be sure.
It was just the idea of being bullied so long that the comebacks were there, and they came out of her mouth so naturally. She even watched herself in the mirror. Wondering what had happened to that girl from elementary school.
There was a time she was actually in the Gifted and Talented. Honestly, she didn't know how that happened. It didn't last that long. Especially when her sixth-grade teacher tortured her into believing she was nothing. She never would be.
Of course, it wasn't long after that when something horrific happened with her mother's boyfriend. Nothing had ever been the same since.
She did her best to stay invisible. But they always seemed to find her as if they knew her real, dreaded secret.
Maybe this time would be better. She was off in a burb, living the life with a woman who enjoyed making her a new outfit every week. She didn't know she would ever have a dress to fit so perfectly, but Grandy knew how.
Somehow, she'd drifted through the day in the lovely outfit that Grandy had made for her on her first day. Kat did feel beautiful in the soft floral dress. Yes, it was like she was in her own dream world. Not even a dreaded mean girl could ruin her day.
When she was in the lunch line, she heard a boy talking about the Sadie Hawkins dance coming up. Girls asked boys to those dances in the gym after the first football game.
"Would you mind going with me?" She asked as if she were already in a dream. He was perfect and ever so dreamy. She couldn't imagine someone like him eating in the cafeteria. But it made her think he was the humble sort after all.
"Huh?" He finally looked down at her. His hair in his eyes. He laughed at her as if she were an idiot.
Just then, the fellow behind her pecked her shoulder with his index finger. "I'd go with you."
Kat let a laugh slip as she turned to see the guy standing behind her. She almost fell over. He needed to be in a boy band, and he didn't even know it. She couldn't help but stare at him. Possibly her mouth gaped.
"Sure." She put on her best grin.
He said his name was Uno.
"We have class together," he said.
"We do?" Kat's face was full of laughter. She hadn't noticed him then. It was such a nervous day. She was certain everyone would hate her.
Uno nodded with a sweet smile.
" I don't really dance," she confessed.
"Neither do I." Uno shrugged back. "But we can try."
She nursed her bottom lip. Maybe it was the best first day of school ever.
